I came across an article on MSN News just a few minutes ago and I was simply shocked...

I am very sensitive when it comes to animals (and to all living things - I would hate my plants to have to suffer any kind of discomfit). I really
can't believe that anyone, no matter what, would do any of these things
to innocent animals...

I thought I'd just share this with you all. Rather than just pretending things like this don't happen, I believe it's better to face them and do what we can to make a
difference.

What are your thoughts on this?

I'm strictly opposed to torturing animals.
When I found out one of the members of another forum might be doing that, I set out to find out more.
I think you two are missing a key point here.

Leting an animal starve, or just abandon him because "You're off to chrismas party" for two weeks is ignorance and stupidity, but torturing an animal to the degree of the things mentioned in the article is the result of a severe psicological condition. This basically means the culprits are psichopaths or sociopaths, or simply children heavily traumatised by some incredibly horrendous event.

Also, comapre the number of cases with the number of pet animals. They are relatively few, it makes it likely that, as i said above, they are the victims if the .5% of the population that is heavily traumatised or has a severe mental condition.

Nevertheless this is horrible beyond messure. But before you condemn humankind, take into acount what i said.

I want to add something to this post though, may i direct your attetnion to this article?

And i quote:

"McKenzie's actions were described as "atrocious" and he was sentenced to 250 hours' community work and ordered to pay $33 reparation."

This is the ultimate failture of the system. Granted, MkKenzie is likely some psicopath or was raped as a child or something horrible like that, but that doesn't mean a free pass to commit such atrocious acts, because as much as this man needs therapy he CAN'T BE ALLOWED TO REPEAT HIS ACTIONS, and what is the best way to stop it? To make him terrified of the idea of being caught after doing them because he is getting an actual penalty, not just a slap on the back.

Furthermore this encourages similar behaviour on other people that are not heavily traumatised, and granted, will not disolve a dog with acid, but are still likely to beat up, starve to death or simply misstreat animals because "It's ok to do so". It's clearly worse to smash somone's car with a baseball bat than cutting the ears and tail of a pig for the fun of it, seeing the penalty for the car thing is much worse: could even be jailtime. See what i mean?

Where it up to me i'd be branding with the words "ANIMAL ABUSER" using red-hot iron any person who would commit this, then releasing them, see if them (or anyone who gets to see the permanent and painfull mark) does it again. Now, i understand human rights elevates human life next to godhood and hurting somone's feelings (even say, a kidnappers who was just caught..) is next to a sin, so my idea isn't viable, but they could serve a few years of jailtime!

A $7000 fine is better tho, but i'd still wish there was some jailtime.
I know I'm late on this one, but I just hate seeing things like this. Unfortunately, it happens lots more often then you would think. I personally had an experience with someone I knew and trusted starving animals to near-death. I had a dream about it and went and checked on them and found out what was going on. I don't think I have ever been so mad, heartbroken, and just betrayed feeling in my life. I blogged about it here:

I have since then given away one of my cats (because we had an unexpected baby and I had a zoo of pets) and I am suuuuuuch a crazy person about going and checking on him every couple of weeks. Luckily, the guy I gave Odysseus (the cat) too, LOVES him to pieces and is also my husbands best friend. He only lives about 5 minutes away and I'm pretty sure he is afraid I'd kick his ass *literally* if I ever thought anything bad was happening to Ody. LOL, and I would too! I still have the 3 snakes from the incident in that blog post, and they are still doing great and have grown so much. Lady Croft seems to be a bit behind in development though (she is 1/2 the size of the other 2) I think her ordeal has stunted her growth; but she is otherwise a very happy and calm snakeypoo.

Thanks for adding this story, as sad as it is, its nice to hear that other people are just as softhearted for animals.
Blessed Be by the Goddess!
