There are many types of deities in this world. Some people follow the deities of the celtic roots, others would prefer to follow greek deities, while others may follow native-american deities. My question is how do you know which ones you should "follow" throughout this lifetime. I have tried to figure out through meditation, etc. I have not been successful. From research I have done on the deities of different "groups" there seems to be a god and goddess that rules over the same things in each culture, just named something different, and they have different stories of how they came to be, and there are different aspects in each of them, just like there are similar personalities in all kinds of people, but each person is still unique in their own way. Anyway, I was just wondering how you decided and how I should figure out what "group" to follow. Do you follow the path that starts at your ancestory or do you just pick one you like the most, etc.?

I hope last (farewell?) argument by Lady saphhire is not curtains for this discussion. i want to talk about the hindu pantheon which in mine from birth. of the seven gods and godesses (eight incidentally the child god is two brothers, ganesha and karthikeya (whose photo adorns my identity), three gods and godesses are paired and the child god is the child of the oldest. if one can get proper way to get initiated to these gods and godesses the energy resonance is incredible. the old god (shiva-consort parvati-kali, goddess of distruction) has the third eye. almost all pagans have goals to open the third eye. this god reprents the fact that it is possible. god vishnu (god of life-consort laxmi- goddess of wealth) comes in various forms (avtars) from fish to god at various times to show that gods are nothing but human forms who have become gods. one has to try very hard, but we can become one with god. in his avtar of krishna he has taught arjun the famous gita, in which he has said that the most important function of any human being is to do one's duty without worrying about the fruits of action. fruits will come automatically as per one's karma. he has also pledged in the battlefields of kurukshetra, that if one adheres to the path of righeousness, and one seemso lose crediblity and path of wrong wins, one should not be diheartened, but leave it to lord krishna. He (lord krishna) will manifest himself to correct the wrong everytime. what it means is not to retaliate beyond one's duty. Lord krishna will take care. god bramha (god of creation-consort saraswati goddess of learning) who is the begining of life forms, represents birth and learning of living beings. thus these gods represent life. to resonate with laxmi and vishnu is the easiest. get a picture of the god goddess from the internet and meditate on it for a few days, the god, godess will descend on oneself while meditating on a regular basis. keep one hand on the heart and ask the god, goddess to come they will come. no need to cast circle, but need to farewll the god. otherwise god may not descend next time. just as we have duty, in hindu pantheon, gods and goddess are dutybound to come into the heart of the person who has called them
i hope that i have given some incentive for following hindu pantheon
blessed be
That sounds really cool.....and I like what they represent. Different from other stories about other pantheons.
I also think it's important to keep in mind that if you choose a patron diety or dieties, it isn't set in stone! You can explore practicing with a diety and it can feel wrong, and then you can try to call upon other dieties for different types of rituals or spells and really connect with one of them.

I associate with Cerridwen (because she is a Moon Goddess represented by her cauldron of rebirth and as the crone), Coventina (because she is a River Goddess representing inspiration and rivers) and Branwyn (because she is a Love Goddess representing sexuality and the ocean). But at many times in my life I've called upon other dieties for certain rituals and there was a time when I could think of nothing but Hecate! (It was a troubled and confused time in my life and all I could was think about her, I felt like she might be calling to me.)

Regardless try and explore each goddess or god that calls to you and if you don't like what you find, move on to the next goddess. You will surely find one that seems different than the others to you!

that is very possible, when one connects to gods of other pantheon. for eg, in hindu panthoen there is no goddess for representing virginity. there are goddesses unmarried but it is not the same, so if one wants to celebrate goddess of viginity, then best is other panthons. people use unmarried goddess for the purpose, but it is not the same. in our mindset there is no worship for goddess of virginity, but one can look for such deity
blessed be
