Actually, if you read the article carefully, you'll find that the name is actually misleading.

The title of the article is a little misleading. Most likely because the journalist was not overly familiar with the topic. :) But the decision to give nonprofit status to "The Druid Network" was only a decision to give this particular organization charitable status. Basically it made them a church. This decision was made possible by the fact that druidry was already reconginized as a religion under the umbrella term of paganism.

I received some more information about the Druid path from a guy named Noinden. Here are my notes on what he said.
My Notes

Druidism is the religion.

There is Reconstructionist Druidism - trying to historically
recreate the religion within modern social norms. (RDNA, ADF, etc.)
The ADF has a Pan-Indo-European spirituality and was founded by
Isaac Bonewits and others.

There is Revivalist Druidism - trying to take the modern image of
Celts and Druids and creating a religion from that image. (OBOD) Chief
Ross Nichols tried to make it more Pagan. He and Gerald Gardner went
to the same nudist colony.

There are Druid Lodges that are Deist Christians who are more like
the Masons than Pagans.

Druidry is the philosophy.

Celtic Reconstructionists and Celtic Traditionalists are not Druids
but very Pagan.

Great news! Everytime I hear that paganism is being accepted a little bit here and there, it does my heart good. I yearn for the day that being a witch is no longer judged as a negative thing. I am very, very happy for the Druids!
