Yesterday I started a DEEP cleaning of my bedroom . We live in an older house where my husband previously lived with his ex, who emits very negative energy and who I'm sure left serious pockets of negative energy throughout the place. I moved all the furniture, pulled up the old carpet, etc and now the room feels "empty" (As soon as I've finished I'll fill it with good energy by blessing and dedicating it).Anyway, as he is allergic to dust, he slept in the living room last night. Just before turning in. he had a strong urge to smudge the living room as he felt "uneasy " and felt cold spots in the room. He lit a large bundle of sage in the abalone shell he usually uses and started smudging while I was in the bedroom reading. I heard a loud pop like a pistol shot and he yelled. When I ran into the living room, he had specks of ash on him and the shell was in the floor..He said he had been blessing the room and had gotten to thanking the Earth Mother (he follows the Cherokee path) when suddenly the smudge stick exploded. When I picked up the shell, it had an egg sized hole in the bottom. He has had problems in the past with the sage flaring up or not burning at all when smudging the house, but this was very intense and shook him up. He said he felt a negative entity, but I felt more of a pocket of neg energy - of course, I wasn;t there until after the explosion. I incensed the house with Night Queen and chanted a cleansing/blessing to Hecate, which calmed things down.
Does anyone have ant ideas as to what may have happened or what it may mean?
I would say perhaps its time he cleansed himself ???? we know all through beliefs that when one does rite, we are to cleans the self before we do any spiritual work and perhaps the ash jumping back on him was telling him so and perhaps he may have needed ' healing ' in some way, just my thoughts . Hello again !
Randy (Red Bear) took his bath in herbs and salt, prayed and meditated while in the water and smudged himself when he got out. He said he felt MUCH more at ease. I also had him ground and center.(Not a normal part of his Native American path - until now LOL) I then cleansed and blessed the "cold spot" in the living room where the explosion took place, asking for Hecate's assistance. The area now feels normal and the negative atmosphere in the room has lightened dramatically. I think you hit the nail on the head! Thank you!
Having harvested and bundled sage, there is a possibility that it may have been a simple matter of some organic material inside the bundle that exploded when it heated up. I have seen sage bundles that exploded due to a seed pod trapped inside the bundle. It can be very loud and dangerous. Care should be used when using sage. If the bundle is tied, try loosening the ties nearest the end without unraveling too much. If the bundle is tight it will create pressure as it burns. Thick sage twigs can hold oils inside that will explode under pressure. I always loosen it a bit and inspect for seeds, pods, or even bits of wood. Nature has a way of depositing things through the winds and even animals. Sage plants are harvested and bundled on site. The ties are tightened as the bundle dries.
Hope this helps.
Blessed Be,
Rev. Theresa Helton (Moonraven)
Hi Reverend,
I asked my husband about the bundle he was burning and he said he had actually pulled some leaves off the bundle and was burning them loose. The explosion blasted a hole thru the bottom of a thick abalone shell and (of course) startled him quite a bit. Thank you for the info, though. I usually burn baby bundles and will be sure to loosen the ties from now on. Don't need two of us burning stuff up !
