Here in the desert, the temps are falling and the black widows are coming in the house to find a place to settle in for the winter. I've only found one thus far and was able to get it outside. My concern is my beagle. He is very curious and may not survive a bite. Has anyone heard of anything to repel them that would not hurt my sweet little dog as well? I really really do not want to harm these spiders but my dog is my heart and I will pick him over them. In a couple of weeks, they should all be gone for the winter but I am concerned in the meantime.

Hello I happened to your "Here in the desert" statement,Im a long time Arizona desert dweller,we used Lemon Grass as it actiually Repels snakes,I had a bit of a pblm with scorpions,it seemed to also work. You might want to at least try it. I had outside and inside cats and the LemonGrass never hurt my little sweetys. Try it!
Thank you so much. I definitely will. Did you use the herb in fresh, dried, or oil form?
Citronella will work as well.
Sherry is spot on, inside we use some citronella oil mixed with water and wipe down walls, corners and surfaces. It repels spiders and all other insects. Spiders seem to REALLY hate it as the sense of taste is apparently in their feet.
Alternately use it in a water mist spray/atomiser and mist over all the places you want spiders to steer clear of.

Try chestnuts scattered around the perimeter of your home. We use them here in Washington State and they seem to work. Good Luck.
Hello Romany Girl
I live in southern ca. Were I am, we have lots of spiders year round .Some people say lemon pledge is helpful in the house .The idea I guess is they do not want to walk on the oil .You can also mix neem oil, liquid soap and water and put it is a spray bottle and spray where needed .

we dont usally have black widows but i have seen them .
Thanks so much everyone. I'm going to do all of your suggestions. I had no idea that spiders taste through their feet. That is so interesting. Thank you all again so much.
