i thought superstitions would be a fun topic...i was raised by an extremely superstitious (old-fashioned catholic) sicilian  grandmother and the topic has always fascinated me. i do believe in some of them, from experience and most of them i unconsciously follow because it's been so ingrained in me. some of the ones i believe and still do...

1. if a bird sits on your windowsill, you're close to death. (i knew this one my whole childhood and when my grandmother was on her deathbed she told me everyday about "her bird"-the bird that sat on her wndowsill everyday and sand to her. it never clicked until she died. i think it was her way of telling me she was ready to go)

2. keep a broom, brush side up, at your front door to ward off bad energy. if it falls, an unwanted visitor is coming.

3. never rock an empty cradle, or you'll never have a baby to fill it.

4. spiders and ladybugs in your house are good luck, birds and moths are bad.

5. spilled salt, broken mirrors, umbrellas indoors, walking under ladders-bad luck

6. writing in red ink makes you lose money

7. if your palm itches, you're getting money soon.

8. rocking an empty rocking chair invites spirits into your home

10. guests should always exit through the same door the entered.

those are just a few, i have hundreds. what are everyone else's? or do you follow/believe in/heard of the same ones i mentioned? or do you think they're all silly?

this is cool for sure, 2. I always hear it the other way around, as the brissel's took the bad energy into the floor or ground and stop them from entering or it grounded them, from doing harm, if they are spread upwards they are dispursed all over the place, as the brissels go in many directions, or so I was told, so mine is always brissels to the floor. Are they superstitions ??? I dont know, but the ones I do know, work for me. I think that would depend on which palm ? and No, some are perhaps but not all. BB
i've heard variations of all superstitions. like in america seeing a black cat is bad luck while in most of europe it's good luck....they're subjective to a lot of different things. that's why i started the post- to hear all the different ones!
Well, here's what i know.

Number one: Back here in south and central america, owls are omens of death, it is related to Ah-Puch, that was the mayan god of old age and dead, he had the head of an owl. Thus, owls are considered a bad omen.

Number two: Read 3 books about witchraft and in all of them says the magic broom is often placed in the door of the house to keep negative energies away.

But that's all i know.
LOL - well I see a black cat everyday... she lives with me?? Oh what to do... You do realise superstitions are all folklore and again its the magick we add to it that makes it work... eg: the black cat story... most crones of the village were the herbalist and midwifes - and when witches were persecuted - these were the first ones to go as they were doing magic... the fact is they were also lonely and had a cat most of the times, why it always had to be black... maybe over time it was associated with bad luck cos of the colour.. but the cat was seen as the extension of the witch... same for example on never walk under a ladder... a bit more practical. There is a good chance someone is on top of it and can drop something on you. Friday the 13th - it is just the night the Knights Templar was brutally murdered.

I love talking about these things - this weekend we went away and we were sleeping in the bush (not physically) but in a country cottage - well I woke up at 4am with an owl sitting outside my window. Superstition says he is there to collect my soul... well I did take it very carefully the day but not really bothered... as you pointed out depending on country (folklore) the meaning changes.
I would love to see an owl that close! :D
#6... if you are a bookeeper, being "in the red" means that you are in debt (with less money than you owe..) so red ink is a VERY bad thing!

#7 if your palms itch, and you are a cashier, it means stop handling the damn coins! Your allergic! (like me)

lol... I think a lot of superstitions are complete nonsense... a few make sense though. Some are practical... others have more to do with the time they were created. I personally have very few superstitions. However i don't run around breaking mirrors and steppin' on cracks either!

I think if you see the grim reaper in a mirror standing behind you, duck! Don't walk under ladders... they might fall on you!

Blessed Be!

ROFL - I find this so funny... no one cares to believe in superstitions, yet like you pointed out you dont go stepping on cracks and I bet you also throw salt over your shoulder when you spill some...

In reality take note next time you use a lift or a plane. There is very seldom FLOOR 13 and most definitely no ROW 13 on a plane... and these are people with brains who developed or build this.
lol... I do think that is funny. I have also heard that most hotels dont have a room 13, and big buildings dont have room or office 666... lol- silly, yet interesting.

I do have my weird superstitious habits, I think a lot of us do. I knock on wood when I say things are going well... just in case. If my necklace latch has fallen forward I make a wish as i slide it back. And if I find a penny on the ground I always recite "find a penny, pick it up, and all day long you'll have good luck!" - a few days ago I did just that and right after I picked up the penny; I found a nickel and had a GREAT day!

Even so, I don't KNOW that my superstitions are real or not...but they are fun. I do think that it is the energy that you put in that determines what you get out!

Blessed Be!

DNA CODE Im born today of DIANA. Im request all protection and strength for journey.
#7 was true for my grandmother, only if it was the left hand which was itching. The right hand itching meant that you would soon make a new acquaintance.
#8 would get you in big trouble with my grandmother, or either of her two sisters. They believed VERY strongly in this one.
