Here's some interesting information about the pledge from wikipedia. It seems that the author, Francis Bellamy, wrote it in 1892. And for a real kicker, he was a socialist. The pledge began to be used after a proclamation by Pres. Benjamin Harrison. It started being said in public schools on October, 12, 1892 during the Columbus day celebration (not a day us Cherokees are really all that happy about, btw).

Lewis Bowman was the man who added "under God", and claimed that he got the idea from Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, where even though the words are not in the manuscript, all reporters there heard him deviate from the words on the paper to use the phrase. It was first used in the pledge at a meeting on February 12, 1948 (Lincoln's birthday). The phrase was adopted and used in the pledge by various groups, most notably the largest Catholic fraternity in the world: The Knights Of Columbus. The KOC pushed hard for the "under God" phrase to be officially added, and The phrase "under God" was incorporated into the Pledge of Allegiance on June 14, 1954, by a Joint Resolution of Congress at the suggestion of Pres. Eisenhower.
When I say the Pledge, I try to keep in the back of my mind, THIS IS MY GOD, i pledge under. If you make it personal I find it alot easier to deal with. Also, the term God can be used loosely, is what what the majority of america sees it as, no. But do not ignore the wiggle room there. Now I can see an issue if you personally only believe in the Goddess. Truth is, Under God was added to the pledge during the Cold War. It is a discomfort for alot of religons that are not christian based... What I use to do, was instead of God say Gods, but eh, that was my pride. Now I look over it as just a pledge to my great country. to my fellow neighbor.
I stand up, slap my hand over my heart, and fervently say the Pledge along with everyone else. It is no one's business what Deity is important to me--and I will say "under God", doesn't hurt me; doesn't hurt my Goddesses.
Drama free.
Oh, and you guys who are engrossed in grammar and correct spelling, "disrespect" is not a verb--it is a noun. I am an old crone so things may have changed in the past 30 years. However, I feel you cannot "disrespect" someone, you can show them disrespect or treat them disrespectfully. As I am doing to you with this impromptu little lecture.
You'll live.
Sunshine on your head!

"Disrespect" is a noun and a verb... At least according to those at Princeton University. To disrespect, as a verb, is "to show a lack of respect for" another person, a place, an animal, an idea, etc. So one can, in fact, disrespect another person, and be grammatically correct while doing so.

Princeton Word Net:

Noun
* S: (n) disrespect, discourtesy (an expression of lack of respect)
* S: (n) disrespect (a disrespectful mental attitude)
* S: (n) contempt, disrespect (a manner that is generally disrespectful and contemptuous)

Verb
* S: (v) disrespect (show a lack of respect for)
* S: (v) disrespect, disesteem (have little or no respect for; hold in contempt)

Anyways... I don't feel that most of us are "engrossed" in proper spelling. I personally don't mind the occasional "typo", because we all make mistakes. There is a big difference between "flubbing up" with bad grammar and intentionally disrespecting the English language and your peers by blatantly refusing to speak intelligibly.

People are more irritated by the constant habit of using "chatspeak" in here than they are about common errors. Everyone who has graduated the third grade SHOULD be able to spell "please" "thank you" "this" "what" "them" "there" and "you"...

Can we live with bad spelling? Sure! Is it appropriate and our right to say that it bothers us? yes? Would it serve a few of the STUDENTS on the site well to learn how to habitually write correctly, so that they can grow to be members of society that are taken seriously and have opportunities in life like scholarships, jobs, and a general sense of personal integrity? I think it would...

Now if you are non-native to speaking English... You have my sympathy. If you are under the age of eight, or have some sort of sight, comprehension, or reading ISSUE, that prevents you to spell or write legibly, you also have my sympathy. If you are a stubborn, obstinate, teen or adult who just doesn't give a crud, and CAN write correctly, but refuse to just to be "cool"... than you can expect that same level of respect coming back to you... That is withholding accidents, which you'll probably be able to spot on plenty of MY posts as well.

To those who disagree, I still stand by those who care about BASIC personal integrity. It isn't about being "perfect"... it is about simply caring enough to run a spell check, I forgive you for anything beyond that that doesn't get caught.

Blessed Be!

yea...let me go ahead and admit my spelling sucks. I spell like I talk and have little ability in that as well. nuw if ya wunt me to, i can spit out a lil bit of me hick side cus i ant' got no issue wid a folks spellin meself. I make me own miss takes like em all, but I'sa try to repect my own english in Georgia scools. wich Ant' is in da dictionary here, and so is ya'll.

Now if you wish me to wirte sophisticatedly, I may presume to do that also. In posts, I choose which dialect would be most appropriate, and if anything I would much rather speak in the above form. Megan you have a point- as always. typos over look, so on, but when it comes down to it, some times I just want to type as I speak.
I say gods..it works for me..
I am long past school now, but even back when I was in elementary school, I would just sit down. The other kids thought badly of me, but I didn't care. I didn't have anything other than it just felt wrong to stand and say all that. I didn't even know what it all ment, I thought it wasn't fair to ask little kids at say all that, like they were trying to brainwash us or something. That was just my choice.
