I'm not sure this is the right place for it, but I have a problem so I’m throwing it out there:

I'm not sure if I'm not grounding properly, but every time I go to ritual I feel fine before centering and grounding; after I center and ground, however, I get a huge headache. Sometimes it happens over time while in ritual, but lately it's been happening right after I ground. There's a twist though, we have class once a month and we have it in the room next to our High Priestesses sacred space (which we use for ritual, but haven't the past few months due to rain-we go to someone else’s house instead and the headaches are happening there too). When I get into her house I'm perfectly fine, but when I go downstairs for class I sit in my little corner and the headache starts up again (and I hadn't done my centering and grounding for the day yet).

Can anyone help?

ADDITION:

Thank you all for responding, I haven't been able to get on it a while but I have read your comments and will try to do some new things. It hasn't happened in a while, but that could always change so I'd rather add to what I do then not and it get worse. Thanks again.

The first thing that comes to my mind is perhaps there is something you are reacting to. For me, I am very sensitive to scents, frangrances, etc and if the incense or candle scent is too strong I will get a headache. Could this be happening to you? Is there something new that is being used in your space and in the other ritual space?
No, nothing is really different. It didn't happen when I first started going to ritual and class, but it happened over time as I started to learn more and more. I would say I'm grounding wrong since that's when it started to happen (when I learned how to properly do it), but there are times that I don't center and ground and I still get the headaches; like when we go to class.
MM Skye Moonstone,
I am getting what feels like a crown on my head..... not a headache as such.......... but sometimes I get one afterwards too. ! Even when I ground and centre !... Does this ma ke sense to you . I am on my own ........so what I learn is all Solitary. Except for here of course I've no one else to talk to. I mainly get it when dealing - writinng to people who are in the Craft as such.
though some times it can come around for no apparent reason and last nearly all day !

What grounding technique are you using? There are various ways to ground, and you may need to try different ways to find what works best for you. Do you get headaches when you center and ground at other times, not related to ritual, like at home? Otherwise, it may be something in the environment that you are sensitive to that is giving you headaches - it may not be something that you can smell or otherwise detect, like dust, mold, dander, chemical residues, etc. Are you fasting before ritual or otherwise skipping meals? It could be low blood sugar. Good luck with this, headaches are no fun.
I don't think it's food related and my HP tends to keep a very clean house, so does the other person's house we use for Moon. I've done different techniques and it only ever happens either after I'm done grounding (where it might happen right away, or gradually over time in the ritual) Then there's the times when I go to class and I get the headaches when I get downstairs; however I'm perfectly fine upstairs. Another thing you said was does it happen when not in ritual; the answer is: other than the classes I don't get headaches when I'm not in ritual.

I did just remember something. I usually don't get headaches at work (I work at The Crystal Fox), but every now and then someone will come in and can't stay for long because the energy is just too much; unless they're near me, then they're fine. (This happened recently with a customer who couldn't go to the side of the store that had our crystals, but we went over there together and he felt perfectly fine; and no I didn't get any headaches.)
may I suggest that 3 days before your next planned ritual that you write down a log of all you do those day.. sleep routine, what you ate (i'm a big believing in what you eat effects you), stress levels, actives, meditation & yoga practice, ect.... then ground and see if you get the headache. Then write down everything leading up to the ritual, how you feel, who was there, what candles where buring, herbs used, the weather,.... you get my point.
write down everything, see if you get the head then see if you notice anything in common. it could be something very simple like a smell in the room or when the scented shampoo the person next to you used.
if you find nothing from doing this. then you may have to look more deeper into the headache being a block in your charkas or maybe the grounding you are doing isn't the best for you (for whatever reason). I found that offen the simple answer is right in forward of us but we over look it, so writting everything down helps me see the big picture, so to speak. good luck :)
I'll try that. :)
Hi Skye,

Where does the headache seem to be originating? The answer can make a big difference in helping to identify what's happening. I also agree with everything already posted and think you should do all of it, including exploring other ways of grounding.

Also, you mentioned a High Priestess. This is exactly the kind of question you should bring to her, especially if she is the one presiding over classes and/or ritual. She needs to know if something is happening the space that isn't benefiting you, and it will help her refine her technique, as well as yours, to troubleshoot together. If she doesn't yet have the experience to answer your question, she should hopefully be able to suggest an elder in your tradition that can help out.

Good luck & blessings,

The headache is the front left of my head, where my headaches always are.

I asked about this with my High Priestess and she said we could make a sacred space for class, she says she's done it with her other classes and wasn't sure if she should do that with the Neophytes yet, but when I confonted her with this issue she said we would, I'd just have to remind her. However, the thing is that I don't get these headaches anywhere else. In circle, and durring class. Circle is held at one of two locations, our HP's house, which is also where we hold classes but not in the altar room, and another member's class. I'm not sure us doing a sacred space for class will help, but I am hoping it would.

She also suggested I try different crystals since my Hemitite ring didn't seem to be working.
Sometimes the energy being raised in the circle can give me a headache afterwards. I'd be interested in learning you ground? As previous posts have said it could be a particular smell in the sacred space, it could be a particular mixture of smells, the incense smoke, or even the weather, as pressure changes can evoke headaches. To me though it's about energy somehow. Something is interfering with the process.... there's a block of some kind there.....
The grounding I usually use is the one where you make yourself into a tree and connect with the earth and ground water. You mentioned you get a headache afterwords, I don't, for rituals it's always right before (when i ground) and durring, but never after. And for class it's only in her basement, which is where we have class (near, but not in, the altar room). I work at a pagan store, so scents wouldn't be the issue. Weather, I don't think so, I only get headaches weather wise when it's getting hotter. As for pressure, that I'm not sure.

CLEARING AND RELEASING

Clearing and releasing of excess energy is extremely important. Its important to do this before a magical working so that your energy will flow freely. Its important to do after a magical working so that the

excess energy that may be left in your body doesn’t cause you difficulties.

There are many signs of excess energy. Dizziness, lack of balance, feeling giddy or disoriented. Excess energy may also be marked by hyperactivity, inability to rest or sleep after a magical working.

There are many ways that are used to clear and release excess energy.

The following is a good method of clearing energy, and the one we recommend you start with.

Use this technique before a magical or psychic working to release any tension or anxiety that you may be holding from the events of the day, so that your energy will flow freely. Use it after the working to release excess energy.

Put yourself into a comfortable position -it doesn’t matter if its sitting, kneeling, or laying down, but it should not be standing, as you may tend to loose your balance until you become proficient in the technique.

Visualize -that is to say imagine very strongly- a bright white light pouring down from above the top of your head and passing through your whole body, exiting through the soles of your feet. Release all tensions, anxieties, and stresses in your being, imagine them flowing out of you along with the white light. Let it all pour out of you. Imagine the excess energy as little bits

of darkness being carried away with the light as it flows through you. When the last little bits of darkness are gone, let the light stop coming down, and let the last of it flow out of you.

Another version of this uses the image of water, rather than light. Some people find it easier, because the image is more familiar. So if you have difficulty using light, try this;

Again, find a comfortable position. Imagine yourself lying in a river, with the water flowing through you, entering through the top of your head, and exiting through the soles of your feet. Imagine the excess energy as leaves and twigs and other detritus as might fall into a river. See the water carry these things away from you. Again, when the last is gone, you are clear.

There are many other ways to do this as well. Some people imagine themselves standing before a beautiful lake. They imagine themselves being very dirty. They walk into the lake, until the water completely covers their head. Then they see themselves walking back out of the water, completely clean. Other techniques visualize wind blowing through the person, to blow away the excess energy, or fire burning it away.

Still another technique is to imagine a long root, like the root of a tree, growing down from your root Chakra (your pelvic region, loosely speaking. You’ll learn more about Chakras in a future lesson). Visualize this root going down into the Earth. If you are in doors, see the root going down through the floor and through any lower levels of the building, then entering into the Earth. Let the root going down deep into the Earth. Now imagine your excess energy running down through this root to Mother Earth. When you are done, draw the root back up into yourself.

One can also use physical objects to help release energy.

One of the simplest ways to do this is to put a bit of salt on the tip of your tongue, or run the tips your fingers through some salt. This will have a natural grounding effect, eliminating the excess energy.

Another technique is to hold a piece of HAEMATITE. Haematite has a natural grounding quality, and will have some effect by itself. But to get the best effect, hold the object and imagine the excess energy draining into them from all parts of your body. When you are finished, hold the object under a stream of cold water (such as a bathroom faucet) and imagine white light pouring through the stone as the water washes it. This cleanses the stone.

In each case the excess energy returns to the Mother Goddess when you release it. She will recycle it, putting it to good use elsewhere. Some people like to say an affirmation when they release such as “I clear and release all excess energy.” or “I release this energy to the Goddess, to be used elsewhere.” This sets a clear intent, and can sometimes help to focus the process. It is not necessary to say the affirmation out loud.

All of these techniques are good, but we feel the white light, or else the water, are preferable because they tie into things you will learn in successive lessons, and as well as releasing excess energy they also exercise important psychic muscles that you will need later. But as in all things, the most important aspect is that it works well for you.
