Ok, guys! Time to start week 3's discussion, which will also be our final discussion, so I'd like to start off by suggesting a few talking points.

First, what are you thinking about the "vamp" legend/lore as it's continued to unfold in the book? Has it still appealed to you throughout the remainder of the book? Did you still find it interesting through to the end, since everyone so far has seemed to enjoy it?

Second, what new themes have you found in the book leading up to the ending, and did they remain subtle or did they feel harped-on?

Third, overall, did you still find yourself wanting to just read and read, or did you have to push yourself to get to the end? That, to me, is always an important part of reading a book! :)

Fourth, can you pose a question other than what I've listed to the rest of the group?

When you answer, please describe in some detail what you think. I'm going to reserve my own response till some of you have replied, as I don't want to "lead" anyone anywhere, and I also want to see what others have to say. When you answer, also, can you please give me some idea of your age (a range is fine, if you don't want to give an exact!)--mainly, since this is considered a teen novel, I'd like to hear if we're dealing with all ages of people reading, or just teens here. It will be interesting to hear your replies. Let's get this party finished (LOL)! This discussion will remain open until we've "exhausted" all discussion.

Hugs and BB,
Jen :)

Like I have said before, I like the new twist on the vampire lore. The fact that it is just a part of life in this book is interesting. While, the humans do fear them they also revere them for there skills in the arts.

Zoey taking on leadership of the Dark Daughters is awesome! ( I have read the series so I know what happens and won't say anymore on it or the Red Eyes for those of you that haven't read it yet.)

I read the last third in literally two days which was quite something for me. I love Zoey's HP's powers! I have a hard time getting alone time to do my own rit's but I hope that when I can and do that I will feel even an itch of what she feels.

My question that I am posing : What do you think that will happen to the Dark Daughters as Zoey takes over the group?

To simply answer your question, for starters: I think the DD's are going to evolve into a much more accepting and approving group who will change how they do things and who will be much more inclusive of others. I also think that Z's friends will become a part of them now that they will no longer be the "outcasts" they once were. I think it will be a positive change, and Z will take the group in a much different direction--it'll no longer be the exclusive type of group it was before... JMO, and we'll see, I suppose.

P.S. GREAT question! :D
As a reminder, I'm 35. I could NOT put this freakin book down! It was just soooooooo good. I wanted to post my answer to the 2nd questions so bad, so I could finish it, and I read the end in 1 sitting, it was just sooo good. It didn't answer all of my questions, which obviously as a series, I figured it wouldn't, but it answered a good majority of them. I was happy to say I liked the ending, and I really felt like it was just amazing from start to finish. I LOVED it!

I really liked the entire vamp lore, and I have to say that I like it when people change the vamp lore to suit their needs. It's tired when people don't change it sometimes, but when it changes too much, it's also irritating, cuz you need something familiar. I liked the way this lore evolved, and how it kept giving some ideas of how vamps evolve from fledgling to adult. It really held my interest, and I was impressed with the detail and thought put into it.

New themes to the end were a lot of witchy themes, ghosts, and that sort of thing this time. I think there weren't really a lot of new ones introduced into the very end, other than the idea of a new type of HP, honestly. Unless I missed something, and I might have--you guys can correct me. I do have to say that I enjoyed the idea of the Indian themes throughout, too. I liked the rituals and stuff throughout the book as well. It really merged a LOT of cultures, and did so very well, IMHO.

My question to you is: How well in your own life could you relate to Z and how much has been thrown at her in such a short period of time? Do you think if you were her you could do what she was forced to? Me: Probably yes, as I've sorta been there and done that in certain circumstances (clearly, not the same, but I've had to do something similar, and it took a lot out of me, but I did it--and successfully; it was also completely inadvertant, but it happened, and I paid a price for it; and now don't you just wanna know more? LOL).
well i must say that i loved this book all the way through the end. re-reading Marked made me want to read the rest of them. i also have to agree with you jennifer vampire books get tiring if authors don't change the lore a little bit. if it was always the same lore then it would feel like you were reading the same story with different names over and over again.

also zoey becoming part of the dark daughters was great even though i didnt really like the group to begin with. but i must say that the group should get better now that zoey is in charge. i believe that once zoey takes over DD the group will begin to change. they will all learn together since zoey dosent know much about any of the rituals and stuff that goes on in the group. i also think that the group will become more accepting to new members, and not just have the same type of people.

another thing that i want to add is that i love the itallic message that zoey remembers on page 236.
You are old beyond your years, Zoeybird. Believe in yourself and you will find a way. But remember, darkness does not always equate to evil, just as light does not always bring good.
i like this message because it is true that light and dark don't always mean good and evil they can be switched. Something can be good but then switch to something bad.

yes, i think i would be able to handle all of the changes that zoey went through not only because i think its awesome but because i have had some major changes in my life and it wouldnt be so hard for me to just go off and make all new friends and go to a totally different school because i have done it all before.

my question that i would like to add would be: how do you feel about the magickal stuff that the Dark Daughters perform? do think it's realtively close to what we practice or is it totally off?
i think it is all pretty close because you can change any religion you want to fit your needs. i really loved the spell zoey did on page 247. it made me think of some of the rituals/spells that i have read in some of the wicca books. it also makes me wonder if either of the authors practice wicca.
I also love that message--it's a great message to hear, something that most people don't consider. It's something I've heard again and again, and once you reach my age (for you young folk! LOL), you start to really recognize how true it is.

I have wondered several times if they have ties to Wicca and/or Native Indian traditions. I have thought that all along, and think I may have mentioned it as well. I think the magickal stuff the DD's have practiced, while perhaps being too much for them (clearly at least too much for Aphrodite), is very close to Wicca. I don't think it's totally off. I also think it has some ties to Catholicism, if you look at drinking the wine. It ties into many religious rites. But we also take some offerings, and often ingest them or at least give them to a figurehead. So, that is very much in line with our own practices. And I think they have been at least pointing at eclectic Paganism/Wicca.

I think you're right on there. Whether they are or not, they've certainly studied it in great detail for the book, and it's authentic. And BTW, when I ordered my next BOM, I got the next 2 books in the series! LOL ;) Maybe this is what we'll read next month? :D
