JULY 2010 BOM "Betrayed" by P.C. and Kristin Cast, Week 5, Discussion 5, Ch. 25-32, FINAL discussion

Hey guys,

I'm really excited to start the last discussion! I couldn't wait to finish this book, don't know about you guys, but based on the responses I've been getting, it sounds like the few who have answered have been as engrossed as I have!

A note I'd like to make, since we'll start back on the Psychic Energy Codex for next week: We'll read the chapters one by one until the last week of August, where we'll read the last 2 chapters, both of which are short, together. Following that, for September, we'll be reading New Moon, which we agreed upon when we voted for the last fiction book (New Moon and Betrayed came in at a dead tie). What I'll need you guys to do is start thinking ahead about what non-fiction books sound good to you, and I'll post a voting poll starting towards the end of next month or the first week of September, so get your thinking hats on!

Now, for the discussion for the end of Betrayed!

1.) Were you still dying to read the end, or did it lose you?

2.) What did you think about Zoey's dream? Did you think it was odd that she had that graphic a dream, and how did you feel about her tossing out the liquid Neferet gave her before she went to sleep--did you think that was a factor in her having the dream?

3.) What did you think about Zoey's discussion with Aphrodite and the subsequent meeting with the Detectives? Were you surprised one of them had a sister who was Changed? And how about the interaction with Neferet after the Detectives left?

4.) What about the later interaction with Aphrodite at the stables, while Zoey was brushing Persephone and trying to find Heath? Did it surprise you, or were you ready to accept that at this point, while they may not want to admit it, they're on the same team?

5.) How did you feel about Zoey's power displayed so openly to Heath and the really powerful display toward the ghostly "undead" vamps? What about Stevie Rae and her reactions to Zoey and everything that Zoey now represented vs. what Stevie Rae now represented--do you think Stevie Rae still has some of her old Okie in her, some of her heart left?

6.) Were you shocked by Neferet's appearance and then her horrid anger and lashing out at Zoey and Heath? How about the way Zoey insisted on remembering everything she and Heath experienced? What did you think about Zoey and her character--did it speak to you for how she handled it all?

7.) Please pose a question for the group to answer.

See ya next week back on Psychic Energy Codex!

Hugs and BB,

Jen :)

Hey guys! Here's how I feel:
1.) I read it before I posted the last questions! LOL oops--just couldn't wait to finish it!

2.) I was thinking it was probably a premonition, or what they've been calling a vision. I thought that it had to be due to her connection to Heath and Stevie Rae, plus the fact that she didn't drink whatever foul liquid Neferet concocted! I think it was the smartest thing she could have done, tossing out the drink and not drinking it. I wanted to yell at her not to drink it! I was so glad someone told her not to, even if it was someone she didn't particularly like!

3.) I thought it was very interesting that she went to Aphrodite first, although it was good to get the info from the person who would know exactly what it was like to have a vision, you'd think she'd talk with her mentor first, which is EXACTLY the thing she shouldn't have done in this case. But Aphrodite knew first-hand what it was like, and I think the convo was a pretty good one to have. I thought it was a very good conversation she had with the Detectives, and I thought she did a great job of manipulating into her turf, not letting Neferet run it. The dynamic was great. I was surprised that one of them had a Marked/Changed sister, but I thought it was nice, because it gave Zoey a way to talk to someone who could be understanding, and she had someone on the outside besides her G'ma that she could trust. The convo with Neferet was almost disturbing, but Zoey, again, is learning how to manipulate things, and it's good for her to do that with Neferet...

4.) I thought it was great that Aphrodite showed up. I think it gave Zoey the courage to do what she knew she needed to do. It was one more push in the right direction for their relationship, and I think that they're both going to find out soon that they need one another, much as they might not wish. I'm very curious to see how it will play out in future books. I think they'll really find comfort in one another sooner rather than later. Zoey knows so much more about Aphrodite, and she knows Aphrodite really isn't all about herself, and they both want the same things, really. I was not at all surprised, as I figured Aphrodite had seen Heath in danger, as had Zoey. I felt like she didn't want to see Zoey suffer, no matter if it was a human or not, whatever her actual motives behind it all--the school being tainted, Neferet's involvement, whatever it was--I felt like there was more to it, though, that it was about Zoey and Aphrodite playing on the same team.

5.) I was a little surprised that Zoey displayed so much in front of Heath, but she didn't have a lot of choice. I wasn't surprised she did it in front of the ghostly vamp things. She had no choice, and fighting so many, had so much to do. I figured that Zoey would probably be able to get through to Stevie Rae, and I do believe that there's some of the old Okie Stevie Rae left in there, but I'm disturbed that she's very deeply buried beneath that undead Stevie Rae, and whether or not Zoey can save her, I'm very worried. I LOVED Stevie Rae as a character, and I'm so sad that Zoey doesn't have her best friend anymore. Damien has his guy now, the Twins have each other, and Zoey's alone. I wonder if she and Aphrodite will end up as BFF's and this is the way to do it? IDK, but I'm very sad for Zoey and for the character of Stevie Rae--that heart was so true!

6.) I wasn't at all shocked by Neferet's appearance. I thought she was the bird that flew in and made all the noise, trying to get them to come out of their hidy-hole. But I was surprised that instead of taking them to her and acting in front of the cops as though she'd helped them up out of that pit, that she instead raked them and hurt them more! I couldn't have been more shocked, I don't guess. I thought it quite unwise, plus erasing their memories. I guess it was the only way she could erase memories? IDK, but I thought it very stupid. I was extremely impressed that Zoey actually tried so hard to remember that she kept making herself sick. I was also impressed when it got through to her HOW to remember. I was just impressed as could be. I think it says a LOT about her character--that she's grown so much in the past just-over-a-month.

7.) What did you think of the way Zoey handled Neferet and the reveal of the new addition to her tattoo?
ME: I think it was amazing and extremely clever! She knew that Neferet had to understand that she knew exactly what had happened, and she then let Neferet in on her secret--and flat-out told her she was taking her down! Who does that? LOL How fantabulous! Can't wait to see what happens next!

Hugs and BB,
jen :)
1. Like I have been saying, I finished it very very soon. I literally could not put it down. I loved it that much. I have been loving the House of Night series books so much, I have already started Untamed. So yeah. Love love love.

2. I think it was a very prophetic dream. First she dreams that Stevie Rae is one of the undead ghost vamp things then she sees Stevie Rae most like what she dreamed. I am not sure if the liquid Neferet gave her had anything to do with her dream. I just think the dream was very prophetic.

3. To me, it seems like they are getting over their 'mortal ememies' issue. They are not quite becoming friends but it seems like they are starting to tolerate each other. I was surprised that the one detective had a sister that was Marked. I think it gave Zoey a reason to trust him. Neferet was really focused on getting Zoey to drink the liquidy stuff. It seemed really odd that she would focus just on that.

4. It was slightly strange that Aphrodite suggested that to right off the bat like that. It kind of suprised me that she would seek out Zoey just to inform her about Heath, but I was starting to believe that maybe, just maybe Aphrodite is siding with Zoey for once.

5. In a normal circumstances, I don't think she should have done it. But since it was a life or death situation, I am glad she did just to save Heath. I think it was the only way to save the both of them.
I'm not sure about my reactions toward the whole Zoey-undead dead Stevie Rae thing. I guess I was kinda surprised that Stevie Rae acted like that to her best friend and I feel sorry for her since she has to live like that now. Oh yeah, she still has some of that old Stevie Rae in her.

6. Yes I was. But we are seeing more and more of the true Neferet with every encounter. I'm glad that Zoey did because she can use that to keep Neferet from harming her (I want to say more but I don't want to ruin it for those wanting to read the rest of the books or at least the next two or so as that's how far I've gotten). Yes. I was very proud of her when she regained her memory of what happened.

7. I guess my question would be: Do you think Stevie Rae will ever become the old her again or do you think she will stay the dead undead Stevie Rae?
I would answer but since I've read ahead, I don't want to give anything away. I will say what really happened and I want to see what everyone else thinks first. I will say that I did think she would never be her old self again before reading Chosen.

To Jennifer: I'm glad she did and I think she's very brave for doing so. I would never have been able to do what she did if it were me. I really like the new Tattoo. I think it shows just how proud Nyx is of Zoey.
I'm kinda thinking that somehow Zoey will find a way to change the situation and help make Stevie Rae turn back into the old Stevie Rae, but I'm not sure how. Zoey is so special, it just seems like she'll manage it!

jen :)
