MM all,

I would like to share a couple of resources you may enjoy. First, the Village Herbalist has several online mentoring services. But what I like most is that she has some iPod recordings to download from iTunes that are really informative and free. :0)

Also, a friend told me about Horizon Herbs. These suppliers have an extensive catalog of many kinds of medicinal herbs from all over the world.

Kathleen, I have found that black cohosh, soy, and green tea are good.

Kathleen,
There are a lot of good herbals you can use-- there are also some good aromatherapy products you can use as well. You may want to start a dicussion in the forum to get really good answers, so people can give you approximate doses and then discuss them with your doctor or pharmacist, if you are taking any rx drugs (to check for interaction), but that way, there's not a huge answer listed here. I can give you some answers, but it would be long... A discussion would work better. Also, if you list your specific symptoms, it will help narrow down what you would may need to take. Thanks, and we'll help as we can!
Hugs and BB,
jen :)

I really have to add 1 exception to getting the flu shot, and I'm sure I'll be villified, and no one will want to talk to me again! But, here it is: If you have Lyme disease or any derivative of it, or if there's any possibility that you MAY, you really shouldn't have the flu shot. Also, if you have an auto-immune disease, you should discuss the pros and cons of getting the flu shot or the H1N1 flu shot as well with your doctor. It may be best to NOT get either of them. The problem with the H1N1 and/or regular flu shots and auto-immune diseases is that when you have auto-immune diseases, these vaccines (any vaccines, actually) can be looked at by the body, regardless of being killed (as the flu and H1N1 are) or modified-live vaccines, as potentially harmful, and the body can reject not only the vaccine, but other cells around it, including those in your body that are designed to help protect you.

This is so relevant for me, as I have Lyme disease, FMS (fibromyalgia), and CFS (chronic fatigue). All of these are very high-risk ALONE for getting the flu and H1N1, so I do have to take major precautions when being out in public, etc. However, I also know what my body did to me the last time I had a flu shot, and it wasn't pretty... And in doing all the research, I now know why. So, please discuss this with your doctor if you have any type of medical issue that may preclude you getting the vaccine. It's not always ALL about a vaccine. Other preventive measures, such as ensuring that others around you have THEIR vaccines, the above measures mentioned, etc, may be more important for you, if you fall into this category.

Hugs and BB to all,
jen :)

Fighting the Flu
Randall Neustaedter, OMD

When you feel some symptoms, scratchy throat, cough, fever here is your first course of action. Continue this until all symptoms are gone.

• Vitamin C – 4,000 to 6,000 mg per day
• Vitamin A – 10,000 to 25,000 per day
• Oscillococcinum – ½ vial 3 times a day (homeopathic medicine)
• Yin Chiao – 3 times per day (Chinese medicine)
• Echinacea – 900 mg per day, or three droppers 3 times a day
• Sambucol – 2 teaspoons per day (Black Elderberry Extract)

Some of the ingredients mentioned can be found at your local health food store. This information came from the book, “FLU Alternative Treatments and Prevention,” by, Randall Neustaedter, OMD. These natural alternatives will lesson Flu symptoms and help you get cured much faster. Here is his web address: www.cure-guide.com

A couple of preventatives: Take a mega dose multi-vitamin, in addition, take an extra Vitamin C: 1000mg in the morning and 1000mg in the evening. You can take Echinacea daily, but I only recommend using it when you have a virus or bacterial infection.

Here is the site I get my vitamins from: www.puritan.com they have a new multi-vitamin gel cap called, Mega Vita Gel. I love the product. Gel caps absorb in the body much faster, unlike hard pills, which are less affective.

If you have never taken a flu shot, this is the year to get one. There are 2 different flu shots this year. The first shot is the basic flu shot, the other is an H1N1 shot or mist.

Please keep your hands washed often, carry hand sanitizer with you, try not to rub your nose or eyes, unless you have clean hands. If anyone in your home gets the flu, separate them from others in the house, and wear a mask and rubber gloves when around them.
