To Learn how to do Illumination or Drawing on Scrolls ..
Check out used bookstores or Library's take a look in
the Art's area's and at the old Bible Illumination's and
the Book of Kells a lot of museum books have copy's of
different pages as well as you can buy books on
Illuminations as well online. You can also find Idea's of
designs in the Heraldic books as well as make your own
designs with Fairy's, God/dess's, little people, and etc.
One book I have that show's Natural Middle Ages
Illumination's is called The Medieval Garden by Sylvia
Landsberg; ISBN#0-500-01691-7
Papers and Paints to use; use pencil to draw the outline
of your design then you want to get those very fine black
pens that you can get at most art's and crafts if not art
store's .. to go over with you want to get for the paper
type item to draw on is call Strathmore Bristol Smooth,
size 9x12, which is acid free, heavy weight, and a smooth
surface and is great for framing and will last; or you can
also get smaller or larger depending on what you want to
do .. if you want to get more traditional you can buy the
Fine Parchment Gold from most Office supply stores
anywhere from $15 to $21 a pack .. there is ink which can
cover up the mistakes made on the Bristol and if you make
any mistakes on the Parchment is permanent or if you use
designs which the old scrolls were done I do not know the
name but once I get some I'll let you know what it is..
The Paint you want to use for Scrolls is Gouache.. the
least expensive priced Paints are by Reeves,18 tubes so
18x12mi gouache fine, the more expensive one is by Winsor
& Newton; Designers Gouache, Primary Colour Set 6x14Mi,
both of these are water colors and a little bit goes a
long way one friend who was great showed me that you can
take CD cases and use the inside front of it and you can
keep reusing the paints till they run out .. once there
dried there easy to put away till your ready to use again
.. if you really want to go much more traditional you can
buy the Calligraphy Ink's and they come in Black, Red,
Blue, Green, and Gold and Silver .. most New Age Stores at
times carry Calligraphy Pens or ones from a real feather
as I have but I will be using a Calligraphy pen soon
instead the feather pens do not last long .. the
Calligraphy pen which you can also use for painting the
Illuminations with the Inks I own is also by Winsor &
Newton and the Ink Cleaner to clean your pen is by
Liquitex Ink pen cleaner .. and very small fine thin paint
brushes to paint the inks and paints on with ..
I wish You Wonderful time with your Arts ***
Sincerely,
