You could just paint the runes onto found stones or use a sharpie. It's not very fancy but it would get the job done and be very budget friendly.
very nice idea i would like to carve the rune into the stone if possible but if i cant thats first choice for sure. any idea's on how to carve it in?
I made my own from river stones and painted them on. I know you can also burn them on pieces of wood (if you are handy). As for carving them in stone, I think you need a diamond head drill to do that. Judy
as for the wood runes how would you go about getting the wood for them and how big do you think each sould be?
I think the size of the runes is a personal choice. I have small hands and so smaller stones or wood carved runes feel more comfortable in my hands. You don't want them too small tho or you won't be able to paint or carve your rune symbols on them.

A friend of mine created his runes from a 3/4 inch round tree branch that was being discarded. The branch was long enough so that when he made a mistake, there was still plenty left to try again.

Good luck with creating yours! I'd love to see a picture of them once they're complete.

I went to my local craft store and purchased wooden craft sticks that were about 2.5 inches long and .5 inches wide. I painted one side sold and painted the rune on the other side. Good thing about these are that they are the same size so you won't "learn" the runes.

Have fun making your runes!
Hi, Judy, I hope you see this message.... I am trying to find a good way to make my own rune stones. I would like to paint the runes on the stones. What kind of paint do you use? Does it chip? Is there a way to keep it from chipping? I would like to eventually make and sell sets, but I can't drill them as I don't have the tools. But I live right near a beach and would just like to collect and charge my own stones. I've just been looking for someone who can give me some sound advice. Any suggestions you have would be much appreciated. Thanks!
To do stone you need a dermal for hard stone or a pen knife for soft stone. Wood you can do with a pocket knife and a screwdriver.

I find the size of runes that work best for me are on the smaller size. If you plan to use then when you travel smaller is better unless you want to carry this large bag/box with you.

Look forward to seeing what you come up with.
well just wanted to say my stone runes are well under way i decided on useing a drmil as well as a tear drop dimond drill bit for the stones. i got the stones from a park near by just looked for awhile on the gravel road for large anuf rocks to use then i engraved the symbole in them from the Germanic Futhark(24+1 blank rune.) to keep them looking nice even though they are just random rocks i decided to paint them with black fingernail pollish i chose this becuse its cheep i used a sharpy to draw the symboles on the stones before engraving btw.then i used a gold jell pen to fill in the engraved runes for a nice uniformed look.."less tacky lol" agein ill post when this set is done and ill be making a wood set too. soon anuf.
Here is a few pics of the Runes i ended up making from stone im still working on getting the material for the wood ones
