I know I haven't been very active lately, but I wanted to push myself to be more so in the future.
This is kind of a general thing- so I thought the wall would be better than a specific Forum topic.
I HIGHLY recommend the use of coconut oil in baking as a substitute to any shortening or other oils! I've had many health benefits (including weight loss) without losing any flavor. If you get the organic refined coconut oil, there isn't even any taste, for those of you that don't like the taste of coconut.
Just wanted to put that Hedge Witchery/Kitchen Witch bit of wisdom out there for the rest of you!

Saintbella, my guess is that is baloney. Just consider that the entire Mormon population, not to mention all the survivalists out there, probably have 6 to 12 months food stored up.

Saintbella Comment by Saintbella on February 5, 2012 at 12:45pm

Has anyone else heard this???? Some told me that anyone with more than 2 weeks of food storage could be reported as a terrorist. Thats so crazy it wouldn't surprise me if it were true. (I could feed the neighborhood )

Welcome Alfi and all new members! Hello to all our members that have been around awhile but may have drifted away. Please jump in and add your recipes!

I love discovering new cooking methods, flavor blends, and I especially love historic recipes. Recipes from our ancestors, pioneers, etc. Last year I watched a really great series from the BBC called Victorian Farm with Ruth Goodman, Alex Langlands and Peter Ginn. It was incredible! They had some truly wonderful recipes and way of doing things. If anyone has any great recipes from grandparents, aunties, musty old cookbooks found at garage sales please post them....hold up, maybe double check the musty old cookbook recipes first. Those ones may need to be posted at one of our wonderful spell groups instead! Lol :o)

Hi Christa,
I made a quiche the on Monday using half butter like you suggested and it came out beautifully! My 2 main pie experts claimed it was the best crust I have made so far! That is very high praise! LOL...Thank you for the suggestion. Also, instead of blending by hand I used my food processor, just until it crumbled, add ice cold water and only touched it with my hands to move it around as I rolled it. It came out flaky, it was a little tough but I will keep working on it! My two 'experts' both prefer birthday pies vs birthday cakes and one has a birthday next Monday, the other on the 10th of October, so my pie crust making skills will be put to the test! The first one would like a lemon meringue and a deep dish caramel apple with crumble top. I'll let you know how they turned out!
Christa St. Peter Comment by Christa St. Peter on September 10, 2011 at 6:10am
Lori - have you tried using the same pie crust, but substituting butter for half of the lard? Lard is great for flakiness, but isn't as tasty. Butter makes it delicious, but not as flaky. I will post one of my crust recipes in "Desserts".

My mother is making this dish that's to die for. I'll post the recipe up in the discussion.

Sounds like a plan.

PS I am still looking for a good, flaky, mmmm pie crust recipe.

If you have one please let me know. I have a few apples right now begging to be used and will be heading out to the local orchards soon to gather many more bushels for sauces, jams and hopefully pies that I can store in the freezer.

So, please look through your family recipe boxes, favorite cookbooks or memory banks for any pie crust recipes you may have. I will try almost all of them to find "The One"! Lol!! Thank you!!
