Isabell Shipard - How can I use HERBS in my daily life
Thank you!!
I like the book club "One Spirit"--are you planning on using them for spells or medicinal?---this is the best place i know of for all your needs !! Lots of other good reads and info too!
where can i buy this book?
The Rodale Herb Book by Rodale Press is perhaps one of the best books that I have found on the subject of growing herbs, and even has directions for making a knot garden. I do not know if this book is still in print. I found my copy on Amazon.com (where I buy all my books) for just a couple of dollars plus shipping. The best one I have found for the prservation of herbs is The Herbal Home Remedy Book by Joyce A Wardwell ,Storey Publishing. (also bought on Amazon.com) It gives step by step instuctions for Tinctures, teas, tonics, salves and syrups. I have used both of the above books so much, that I am on my second copy of each! Another book that is quite good, is Herbal Remedies In Pots by Effie Romain and Sue Hawkey. This book is great if you are space constricted (like apartment dwellers)and includes the instructions for decoctions, infused oils, creams and ointment. I picked my copy up at the flea market, but I just looked, and amazon.com does have used copies available starting at around 5 dollars plus shipping.
Herbal Remedies In Pots by Effie Romain and Sue Hawkey...found this one on Amazon for 1 penny plus shipping...
1 penny plus shipping ? How wonderful ! Can't beat that !
I got the 2011 Herbal Almanac by Llewellyn. You can get from Llewellyn.com. This book has several different sections. From learning how to gather Herbs, how to dry and store your herbs, different crafts, lotions, etc you can make with your herbs. I absolutely love this book. I do have an herb garden, and then at the end of the summer, I dry these herbs and actually use them all winter, store them in jars, and give them to friends during the Yule season. One hint though.... when drying herbs in the house, make sure you do some of them at different times, or in different rooms. (i.e. rosemary is very strong when first cut, and so I put it in a separate room from the sweet basil - also strong scent when first cut) Otherwise, all the scents together will make for one big headache while the herbs are still pretty potent.

I also have the 3rd edition of The New Healing Herbs. This book I lean on when looking up Herbal type remedies, potions, making teas, etc. This book actually has different type ailments or conditions listed and what herb will help with that. (i.e. PMS, high blood pressure, etc). This book also list the Herbs in alphabetical order and has Theapeutic uses for the herbs, Rx recommendations, the herbs healing history, The Safety Factor - which list side effects if any that are associated with the Herb.

Okay, can you tell I love my Herbs ?! I could go on and on, but in lieu of putting you all to sleep, I highly recommend both these books.

Many Blessings to you all !
Great post, Ariel...thank you for the hint on drying herbs in the house...will be helpful to know when I get to that stage!!

A book that I think is very helpful and has lots of infomative information on how to grow, store, types of containers to store your herbs in, ect.   The Big Book of Herbs, By: Arthur O. Tucker, PHD. and Thomas DeBaggio.

It also tells you the types of soil to palnt in.  I always refer back to this book for all my herb questions.  I hope that it might help you as well.
