Now, I say this about every sabbat, but in this case it really is true! I love love love Mabon! I love the crispness in the air, the colours of Autumn, the scent of the earth, the sounds of crunching through the leaves, the harvesting of fruits and vegetables, canning and preserving those fruits and veggies...just everything about this time of year. We are all busy, busy, busy...back to school, organizing after school activities, gathering all the bits and pieces of our lives in preparation of the hibernation season.

We are fortunate in our house that there always seems to be a birthday or holiday of some sort around the Sabbat. For Mabon, it is my son's birthday...which also falls on 'Talk Like a Pirate Day' which makes him very happy! Lol! So this year we will have a family BBQ, probably the last of the season, and have a BBQ pork loin marinaded in apple sauce and earthy spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, allspice, etc... potatoes au gratin (cheesy taters!) and harvested green beans, roasted root veggies and of course fruit pies! My son prefers pies to cakes.

What will all of you be laying out for your Mabon Celebrations? Do you gather for potlucks or have small family events? Please post some of your favorite Autumn recipes! Also, check back through the discussion list, you will find one called "Mabon Cooking Arts" There are some wonderful recipes on there including one that is called Horn of Plenty from 'Mabon-Witch'...it is such a great idea! I have done something similar to it before and it was a huge hit!!

Apple Berry Crumble

4 -5 large cooking apples, peeled cored and sliced or chopped into large pieces
1 cup of berries. Blackberries work really well, so do raspberries, blueberries etc.
** If you don't have any berries try raisins or dried cranberries. But I would use less of them.
1/3 cup granulated sugar
a couple tablespoons butter for dotting on the fruit
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg

In a large baking dish (an 11x7 dish would work well) add your fruit, sugar and spices. Toss them well so everything is coated. Dot your butter all over the fruit. Set aside.

1/4 c butter
1/3 c brown sugar
2/3 c flour
2/3 c rolled oats (the quick cooking style works best, but use what you've got!)
1 tsp cinnamon

Combine these ingredients into a large bowl. Wash your hands then start smushing everything together until it is in big crumbly pieces. Once mixed together place on top of your fruit mix. Make sure you sprinkle it evenly but don't press it down. It is okay if there are cracks and gaps. While it is cooking those cracks will act as steam vents and the juices from the fruit will bubble up through them making your dish even more delicious!

Line a cookie sheet with tin foil and place your crumble dish on top. The cookie sheet will catch any juices that bubble over the sides and the foil makes for very easy clean up!

Bake in a 325 degree oven for approximately 40 - 50 minutes. It should be a lovely golden brown and bubbly and your house will smell fantastic! Serve warm with vanilla ice cream....mmmm.

Hmm, I think I am going to go one of these right now! I have a basket of apples just waiting for me to do something with them!

Happy Mabon Everyone!

When I get a stove in I will make it. Yummy recipe and I know that my family is going to like it.
That sounds amazing ! I am so glad I stopped by here tonight. I have been insanely busy with canning and freezing and preserving the fruits and veggies from the garden. The Goddess is really good to us ! I feel like I am very behind on things here, but I definitely want to try this recipe. I love Mabon as well ! We usually have a big bonfire out back to celebrate all the gifts from the garden that we've harvested. Then it is time to settle in for the cooler months. But I definitely love the cooler weather !
Have a Blessed week !
I'm going to send a photo here of a dish that my mother made tonight. It's chicken with Dijon Mustard sauce. It's soooooooooooooooo good.

That looks delicious!! I will most definitely be trying this recipe! Thanks for sharing!
I am with you! This is my favorite time of year as well. Thanks for the recipe!
I wish I had a proper recipe for this, but I don't usually use recipes for dishes that are not in the baking/pastry realm. It is pretty easy to make, and so delicious.

Ingredients:

Butternut Squash
Yellow Onions
Fresh Sage Leaves (dried sage is also acceptable)
Grated Gruyere Cheese (parmesan is also good)
Heavy Cream

Split squash and take out the seeds. Oil the cut side and place cut-side down on a baking sheet. Roast in 350 degree oven until it is tender enough to peel and dice.

Slice onions (so that they are in strips, rather than chopped). Cook over medium heat until nicely caramelized. Do not burn them. This takes some time - after the liquid from the onions evaporates, they will begin to turn golden. Add the minced sage and continue to cook until deep golden brown and sweet.

Mix squash, onions/sage, grated cheese, and some heavy cream in a casserole dish. Bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes.
This sounds yummy! I love cooking with squashes. I have half of an acorn squash in my fridge right now. I will make this dish tomorrow night. I promised the kids tacos for tonight. :o)
Oh my ! I have a really good squash casserole recipe that I make. I never thought of putting sage in the recipe.
I am definitely going to try this. I love sage !
I have several sage plants in my herb garden and also one in a pot right by the front door - for purifying my home - and guarding against negative energy that may enter my home. But I often raid the leaves of this plant and literally fry them in olive oil and sprinkle with kosher salt. Then I eat the fried leaves just like chips ! I love them ! Thanks for the recipe !
