Hi, I'm a 31 year old single mother to a 9 year old girl who has low functioning Autism. Fortunately her functioning seems to be getting better. Just thought I'd say hi!

Andy,

I know what it's like to be jerked around by some doctors who don't actually do anything, and get too much information (half of which seems to contradict itself, anyway).

Your daughter will do so much better now that she has a diagnosis. Believe me; just knowing makes a difference.

Autism makes you different, but that difference makes you a whole new type of person as you age. You learn different things, experience a whole new world. Sometimes it's scary, but it's all worth it in the end.

Best of luck to you and your daughter,

~Beyond

Merry Meet everyone, I'm new as well. After countless doctors and years of therapy, my eighteen year old daughter was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome three months ago, we have had that idea for three years, but you always hope your'e wrong when its a permanent disorder. I realize the Goddess uses trials to strengthen us, but it can be very difficult when you have helped others and cannot make real progress with your own daughter. Autism Speaks is a very good site, but it is really hard to find parents of young adults with spectrum disorders that want to talk on forums, I wonder if they aren't just so tired they've stopped talking. And the parents of young children have so many questions that don't really have good answers, it is hard to engage. I would be willing to help anyone I can, but like my wife's endometriosis, its hard to get good information from so many doctors that don't have a clue. And so many quacks that will take your money and lead you nowhere.

                                          Blessed be,

                                           Andy

Merry meet, all. I'm new (obviously) and what I have technically isn't autism, however my therapist says it's very, very close. I have Sensory Integration Disorder, and I wasn't diagnosed until I was fifteen. However, I'm actually happy(ish) with how I am. I've always been different, SID-induced or not.

In any case, just thought I'd stop by.

Blessed be.

Yup yup!
I take Cymbalta for my depression and such, but I know that a lot of the meds they've given my son have done jack, which leads me to believe they've misdiagnosed him, but will the docs admit they've misdiagnosed? Heck no!
Glad you found what works for you now. Also, if you find any good articles on specificly male symptoms, make sure to put it in the resources section and drop me a line, I'd be interested in reading it.

LadyIsarma, it was kind of the same with me. I don't present the way the DSM-IV portrays Aspergers. What is there is the MALE version, as I like to call, and many others seem to as well. There are fantastic articles about Females and Aspergers. Dr Tony Attwood is one of the leading specialists in the feild. Where males tend to have outburst or meltdowns, females tend to shut down and turn inward. There is a report that at least 20-30% of anorectics have Aspergers. I've fought with an eating disorder for half my life, I self harmed, felt out of place, etc. When you list all the symptoms out it most certainly makes sense! I wasn't officially diagnosed till a year ago, but I'd known for a while before that.
I take Effexor for the chemical imbalance. I once switched to Cymbalta because it is said to help with pain, but I went from a functioning human being to suicidal within a few weeks, and the only change was the meds. So effexor it is! I also take trazadone to sleep, but I also have a connective tissue disease that causes a lot of pain and discomfort and my joints dislocate frequently. Without out it, I am up all night in pain.

Wonderful!
I know that not everyone who has these disorders are non-functioning. I mentioned to my therapist today that I think my oldest has Aspergers, and she looked dumbfounded (she was his therapist before he moved to VA) and said "you know, now that you mention it, that makes a lot of sense!" I found it funny that she hadn't seen it until I mentioned it, but once I did it was like a light coming on over her head.

Just want to pop in and say "hello, and Merry Meet!" I am an adult with Aspergers and I like how my brain works! Though, difficult at times, I still manage to get thruogh things with my boyfriend by my side and my service dog Shadow to comfort me! Blessed Be.

Wow, very cool...
Yeah, my hubby's friend Matt was jokingly called his "seizure dog" cause Matt would always call either AS hubby was having one, or directly after. We told him it would be more useful if he called BEFORE... lol... but we didn't take that too seriously. Your client however is very aware, that's a great plus for the caregivers there!!
