The paranormal seems to be growing ever more popular nowadays. Although this seems to be most true with vampires, there are several other "creatures" out there that seem to be getting more fame such as elves, faeries, and werewolves. How do you feel about this and how they are depicted? How do you feel about the people that are into these fictional beings? Also, what are your views on role playing that involve such beings?

Love the discussion on Merry Gentry books, I'm addicted to Laurell K Hamilton books cause she's Amazing!!! My one true weakness, Fiction books about hot vampires and hot Faeries.
Hopefully the Fay continue to get positive press, so to speak. They have been distanced from us for so long. Many have washed their hands of us. We need their aid in the predicaments we've gotten ourselves into. With over 45,000 species on the endangered list, and the environment on a rapid decline, we could use their wisdom once again.
Most fey get positive press. Its just most of it seems to be false press. I have not personally read the Merry Gentry series, but I know in the Anita Blake series, the paranormal have qualities similar to the real thing. Of course, the books are fiction so the paranormal powers are played up a bit.
There is the series "Tithe" which is about faeries and then a couple ones about werewolves such as "Room 13" which is kind of old but its a good, easy book about ghosts and werewolves
Very interesting discussions. I haven't read any of the books you all have mentioned, but I have to agree with Talen that we could use the help of all the Fey in our current predicament. I think that some of the vampire shows have taken some serious liberties with some of the so-called myths/history, like the new Vampire Diaries--the guys have rings that keep them from being burned in the sun, etc. Seems just a bit "convenient" to me, but I admit to not having all of the facts behind everything, but I definitely thought they went "poof!" Kinda hard to go to school during the day and then be out prowling at night, if you regenerate your powers, etc, while you rest during the day? When is the regeneration happening, then?

I don't have a problem with anyone playing a role in the shows, per se. I think the idea behind those is to get people to watch, so you have to get someone decent in it to get anyone to watch, right? I guess there's just not much of a comment there.

I think the RPG's, whether they are online, gaming by computer (disc or whatever), or IRL, as long as one realizes it's just role-playing, is fine. I have a lot of friends who do it, and they get it. A lot of my elfin-kin enjoy the RPG's, and they enjoy the sense of community and the recreation of our old soul-group that they get by being able to do the RGP. So, so long as you don't decide to start running down the streets and claiming you are the role you're playing, I think you're probably ok. We have a massive convention here in Atlanta called Dragon*Con, and tons of people get dressed up and do the RPG thing here. I think it's pretty cool (for those who DO get it's a role!).

Of course vampires are more popular nowadays being that the movie twilight came out and it has attracted a younger audience. I think that a creature that needs to be explored more is the shapeshifter i have only ever read like 2 or 3 books about them. They arent nearly as famous as all the other paranormal creatures like vampires and werewolves.

I think most paranormal creatures are depicted quite well nowadays because of the newest types of writting styles and the fact that our technology has improved conciderably over the past few years. So the paranormal is easier to portray on film/tv.

But to reply to what you guys said about the "truth" (in the very begining of this discussion)of what vampires and other creatures are, how do you know "ANY" of it is the truth? Are you refering to the original stories like "Bram Stokers: Dracula" or do you have some other source that you use to depict the truth?(just curious) :D
Well, I think for those of us who are some of these creatures, or who have past lives recollecting, then we can fill in some of the blanks for that. But relying on some of the old tried-and-true mythologies is part of where we would get the "truth." I think you were probably NOT referring to my post, as I stated not the word "truth," but rather mythologies, I believe? And I think that's more what people are getting at, if I am not mistaken...
