I have a Client/Friend who is suffering from very painful diabetic neuropathy. Well, we're not sure what kind of neuropathy, the doctors can't seem to figure it out. I have used Reiki and light massage on her. She also takes lots of pain medication. Has anyone come across this painful condition?

I've sufferd from diabetic neuropathy for at least the past 1o years. There is no cure for it, one can only treat the symptoms of pain and numbness. Reiki helps curb the pain, especially when it is very bad. Few pain medications seem to work. For those lucky enough to afford it, lyrica, wich has no generic equivalent, can help. Be careful when touching someone with bad neuropathy. Even slight pressures can be very painful. The reiki positions on the head and the root chakra seem to give the most pain relief.
I have neuropathy, not diabetic neuropathy, just neuropathy (nerve pain alone, not as a result of diabetes). And because I don't suffer from depression, Lyrica has horrible effects on me--it actually makes me suicidal. What helps instead is a close cousin, which is Gabapentin, aka Neurontin. It's extremely cheap, and may help others with nerve pain. If the patient doesn't suffer from depression, it may be a better choice, as it actually has a lot less side effects than Lyrica does, and it's much cheaper--something many diabetics would probably appreciate.

In Reiki practice, I would also recommend as Seasons Syphrit did, to be very careful about touching the patient. I usually like to touch my patients, but with neuropathy, it's best not to, as even the slightest touch can cause major pain. Neuropathy essentially causes pain to shoot all over, causes the nerves to go bananas, for lack of a better word, and the nervous system sends signals of pain to the brain--even the slightest touch can cause the patient significant pain, and the body doesn't recognize a differentiation in the degree of pain in many cases. Something that other people would think is just a tiny little bump is actually extremely painful for those of us with neuropathy.

So, anyway, hope this helps some... But I do think that Reiki can do more than help. Believing in Reiki the way that it is taught, Reiki heals--so if you believe that, then Reiki can heal the neuropathy. Continue with treatment, and see how the patient does. However, know that if treatment fails, it won't be your fault. There may be some reason as to why the patient hasn't healed. Follow your instincts and let the Reiki lead you. It will do what it needs to do.

jen :)
I have bi-lateral neuropathy, but also have Diabetes. But the two are not connected. My Neuropathy came from a accident years ago, and the diabetes is newer, but then again my Doctor told me he had read my files and said I had boarder line since I was a kid, but he explained that there is no such thing as boarder line diabetes. And yes the pain can be so intense that I will fall asleep from all the crying done before had and it had exhausted me. I am working up to my RMT and my atunements helped with some of the pain already. I will always keep doing it to help with relief.
Greetings, Running Cloud,
Although there are several causes for Peripheral Neuropathy, diabetes is one of the leading.

As a CMT and a Reiki Teacher I've worked with several cases of peripheral neuropathy. I actually did a report while in school on the benefits of massage for peripheral neuropathy and it can be beneficial. Massage to the hands and feet, when affected by PR helps to increase circulation, stimulate nerves and temporarily reduce pain.

I've had Reiki clients tell me that not only does Reiki give them relief but also the warmth of my hands when giving Reiki.
