How I Quit Smoking

Do you want to quit smoking, cut down, smoke a different kind of cigarette? This group is for people who want to be healthier this year. I smoked for 40 years and didn’t think I would ever be able to quit. I tried everything from cold turkey to group therapy to nicotine patches and gum. None of these methods ever worked well for me.

What finally did work was nicotine replacement using electronic cigarettes. I am now a firm believer in this product. I stopped smoking regular cigarettes and I am never going to smoke them again. I didn’t believe that I would ever make that statement. I now only smoke electronic cigarettes and I smoke only a few puffs a day, with the lowest nicotine level available. I know that eventually I won’t even need them anymore.

This group isn’t a commercial for the brand I used, but I will place a banner here linked to that site. I have only tried this brand, so I don’t know how other types of electronic cigarettes work. I would guess they all work in a similar way. I am not saying this is the only way you can quit smoking. I know people who have done so in many other ways. So in this group, I would like to have members offer support and ideas about how they quit. I also would like members that have not quit to ask questions and to ask for help.

Finally, I think the biggest factor in quitting cigarettes is the desire to do so. I spent years saying I didn’t want to quit. About 7 years ago, I began a gradual reduction in the number of cigarettes I smoked. For me, this made it easier to finally give them up, but it did take a very long time. I wish that I had found the electronic cigarettes sooner, but I might not have been ready then, I don’t know. All I can say is that you have to be ready to quit. You have to be tired of the smell in your hair, in your clothes, in your furniture; the yellow nicotine stains on your walls and curtains. You have to be sick of the coughing and shortness of breath. You have to be done with going outside (sometimes in the cold) just to smoke a cigarette.
You have to say "It's time to quit."

Hi Leanne. Congratulations on wanting to quit smoking. It took me 7 times of quitting before I got to this point, and have now been quit for 3 and 1/2 years. There are still moments when I think I want one, but they pass. I started at 13. I know it feels like you have lost a friend, but you haven't. The tobacco companies want you to feel like that so they can keep you a slave to their product. I finally quit using the nicotine patches and zyban. It was expensive, but now it's cheaper to purchase those things than to buy cigarettes for 10 days. You can do this and you will feel so much better for doing so. I still cannot believe the cardio I can do now that I'm smoke free. I gained weight of course at first, but that is gone now and I think I look better than I ever have. It will be the same for you! big hugs.

Leanne.. thanks so much for sharing with us. I know how hard it can be to quit. I started smoking when I was about 14 also but It took me a very long time to quit. You are doing the right thing by stopping now. It seems clear that smoking is not your friend and has not been good for you. I am sending you energy and good wishes that you can kick it for good this time. I am still cigarette free and it will be 2 years in December. I know you can do it too!

Hey Everyone. I was so happy to see a group like this. I guess I should say a bit about my struggles. I started smoking socially at 14 and started smoking regularly by 16 when my father passed. You would think my father dying from congestive heart failure and COPD would be enough to get me to quit smoking. Not so much I have kept till now at 22. I have tried to quit so many time but it has never worked. I have smoked through pneumonia twice that has left its mark and I have had bronchitis more times then I can count. I just quit 2 days ago after another run in with pneumonia and my doctor practically begging me to give up smoking. I am having such a hard time with it. I feel like i have lost my best friend and my right arm at the same time. Its weird but its not fun. I am hoping this might help. I want to run again. I want my husband to stop wondering if I am going to get cancer and pass over. But lets be honest. THIS SUCKS!

Congrats MaryAnn, that is awesome! I still haven't had one in 3 years and 3 months, but I've had my days where I really really wanted to!

Congrats Emairelhd! I do know how hard it is. I did the gradual thing myself and that worked the best for me. So glad you have added your experience here.

Hi Guys! I am a proud EXsmoker and I thought I'd join to share my experiences. I think the MOST important factor in quitting is a strong support person to help you along the way - mine was my husband. I had horrible results with the patch (crazy dreams) and the gum (ewe!) but did wind up using the lozenges for tough situations. I stepped myself down starting off with my normal full-flavor, going to lights, then going to ulta lights, then getting those little tooth-pick "capris" for a while - then cold turkey with the lozenges to help. I HIGHLY recommend you take a Vit C supplement while quitting, I used Emergen-C power. It really helps!!!

Kimberly, I'm so glad you've decided to give quitting a shot. It's one of the hardest, if not the hardest, things I've had to do for myself physically, but it has been well worth it. That is really interesting about the possibility of nicotine interfering with your medication. The more information that comes out, the worse I find I was treating myself. It's no wonder we all have had such a hard time with them.

LOL about not getting weighed at the dentist MaryAnn! They sent me the new patient paperwork in the mail and they do ask me what I weigh. Isn't that funny? Maybe it is a new approach to overall health or something. I would like to write something cute as a response to that, but I will behave myself and tell them the truth. The good news is that the smoking cessation weight gain is starting to come off now. I am sure that my endocrine system has finally re-set itself and is working a little more properly. Some researchers hypothesize that those who start smoking in childhood (as I did) impair their endocrine system and it can take awhile after cessation for it to start working properly again. Whether that's true or not, I don't know. I do know that my body is starting to respond the way it used to in the past again. Thanks so much for all your support.

Congrats on not smoking MaryAnn! I am so happy and proud for you! I know what a battle it is and how much work you've had to put into this!

Kimberly, I have to tell you ecigs were what helped me to quit. I can say that for sure. I had tried to quit many times in the past. However, you do really have to want to quit. I know that as well. Good luck to you!
