How I Quit Smoking

Do you want to quit smoking, cut down, smoke a different kind of cigarette? This group is for people who want to be healthier this year. I smoked for 40 years and didn’t think I would ever be able to quit. I tried everything from cold turkey to group therapy to nicotine patches and gum. None of these methods ever worked well for me.

What finally did work was nicotine replacement using electronic cigarettes. I am now a firm believer in this product. I stopped smoking regular cigarettes and I am never going to smoke them again. I didn’t believe that I would ever make that statement. I now only smoke electronic cigarettes and I smoke only a few puffs a day, with the lowest nicotine level available. I know that eventually I won’t even need them anymore.

This group isn’t a commercial for the brand I used, but I will place a banner here linked to that site. I have only tried this brand, so I don’t know how other types of electronic cigarettes work. I would guess they all work in a similar way. I am not saying this is the only way you can quit smoking. I know people who have done so in many other ways. So in this group, I would like to have members offer support and ideas about how they quit. I also would like members that have not quit to ask questions and to ask for help.

Finally, I think the biggest factor in quitting cigarettes is the desire to do so. I spent years saying I didn’t want to quit. About 7 years ago, I began a gradual reduction in the number of cigarettes I smoked. For me, this made it easier to finally give them up, but it did take a very long time. I wish that I had found the electronic cigarettes sooner, but I might not have been ready then, I don’t know. All I can say is that you have to be ready to quit. You have to be tired of the smell in your hair, in your clothes, in your furniture; the yellow nicotine stains on your walls and curtains. You have to be sick of the coughing and shortness of breath. You have to be done with going outside (sometimes in the cold) just to smoke a cigarette.
You have to say "It's time to quit."

Yea, that's the problem, he wants a smoking companion, and it's almost like he resents when I try to quit. I don't care if he quits or not, that's his decision, but it would be nice if he just didn't do around me all the time....don't give in MaryAnn, you're doing a great job :o)

On another note, I know not much has been posted here lately. I was doing really well, and am still not smoking, but for the past couple of weeks, I have really been craving a smoke. I went for weeks and weeks without the urge, and now here it is. %@#* ....it is so frustrating. But I refuse to give in.

Sheila, That is especially tough. Will he be supportive if you quit, or will he want a smoking companion? That is really the question.

Hi everyone, really glad I found this group. I'm going to stop smoking, but the fact that my husband smokes (and probably always will), has made it soooo hard in the past. Any suggestions on how to deal with that temptation?

Eire, you will do it! Being free from a physical addiction and corporate control of the tobacco companies is totally worth it!

Congrats MaryAnn! That is awesome! I still have a tough day now and again. I really wanted a cigarette on Saturday. Not sure why that was. It just happens sometimes and probably always will. It is totally worth a day of discomfort once in a while to be smoke free!

I know I have not posted here in a while. I am still smoke free, though I have had a couple of rough days in the past week. Hope everyone is doing well.

Eire, we welcome smokers, non-smokers, social smokers, and anyone in between. Thanks for joining us!

That is fantastic MaryAnn. I am sure they are all the more inspiration for you to continue to abstain from smoking, challenging as it is. It is so worth it though.

Over the weekend I talked with two friends that I havent' seen in several months. I found out that both of them had quit smoking recently. These were long time smokers with some severe health issues, so I was really pleased that they had stopped.
