I love to read.. I have been reading books about witches and paranormal stuff.. Not real books but I like to read them anyway. My question is in a few different series they talk about their coven colors(or family) or even flowers. And even animals, like a hawk. Is there any truth to any of that? and if yes how do you know what your colors are, or flower or animal?
The Wicked Series authors, i believe themselves are pagan and or know enough about it to portray the reigious apects of it in a fun fictional story. there is some truth to it but most of it is fiction and mainstream.
the use of imagery such as flowers animals and colors comes from the days when a family of noble birth had a Coat of Arms or Heraldry. These symbols were used because the general populace was illiterate and so to make a decree they would sign it with the seal of the ruling noble who ordered it so it was recognized, heraldry was also used so that in the heat of battle soldiers would not attack their allies and was also like dog tags for clearing the dead from the field if you find a body but nothing to identify them by you could see the mark of their house on their tabard or finding a hand with a signet ring also was a way of identification sometimes even sent with ransom demands as Knights were not to be put to death but ransomed back to their king as the code of Chivalry dictated.
Pagan covens and Kindred's have kept this tradition as a way to recognize one another in public without drawing undo attention. on the personal level to find a persons colors you would choose three colors that seem to have a personal meaning to you or that you like extremely well. Following the rules of heraldry you would have a metal, silver(white)Gold(yellow) etc. and either black and a color or two contrasting colors. for example mine are Black Red and Silver or white when used in a medium silver is not available. Flowers are the same something that has personal meaning to you or a favorite in heraldry this can be used as border or topper for the shield or crest. Animal is another matter in heraldry you would use the animal that has the traits you wish to portray as your own a way of showing your strength to those who bore witness to it, as a pagan however you would want this to be more of a portrayal of a spiritual totem or aspect of yourself. their are many ways to find your totems but their is a guided meditation in the book animal magick by D.j Conway that is an excellent way to discover your animal spirit. My personal heraldry is posted with this message to give an example. to find out more on heraldry here is a link http://www.digiserve.com/heraldry/.
I hope this helps and shows that I am not laughing as I tell my students the only stupid question is the one not asked.
