Sustainable Living Program
Environment 185, ESLP, UCLA

ESLP is a student designed, student developed, and student facilitated program offered through UCLA's Institute of the Environment. ESLP runs a Lecture Series which brings guest speakers from UCLA and across the country to speak on specialized subjects including food systems, green business, organic gardens, sustainable living, the green economy, environmental justice, transportation, as well as sustainability projects across Los Angeles. Lecture 1, Introductions, Footprints, and Empowerment by Scott Sherman
Scott Sherman is a founder of the Transformative Action Institute (TIA), devoted to training a new generation of social entrepreneurs, innovators, visionaries and problem-solvers for the 21st century. www.transformativeaction.org

Lecture 2, Environmental and Social Justice by Michael Cox and D'Artagnan Scorza
Michael Cox is from the California Student Sustainability Coalition, a body of students and student groups working to promote student involvement with UC faculty, staff and administration in collaboration with the UC Office of the President and the UC Board of Regents, to implement environmentally sound practices in the UC system and to unite and empower students throughout the state with the common goal of assuring a sustainable future for California and the world.

D'Artagnan Scorza is a member of the UC Board of Regents, he participates in the Universitys governance and advocates for equity and inclusion, affordability and access for future generations of students. His emphasis on clean energy and sustainable practices supports the Universitys environmental-friendly policies.

Lecture 3, Energy by Woodrow W. Clark II
Clark is an author and co-editor on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the organization created by the United Nations that was named co-recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. He is also co-author of Agile Energy Systems: Global Lessons from the California Energy Crisis (2004).

Lecture 4, Transportation, by Tim Papandreou
A committed leader and an early adopter of the low-carbon diet and lifestyle, Timothy Papandreou has worked as an urban planner in Los Angeles and Australia, and will soon oversee the transportation planning and development program for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency. At the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro), Papandreou spent nine years working with public, business and community sectors to develop more sustainable transportation funding policies, programs and solutions. He is a founding board member of Cultivating Sustainable Communities, a non-profit that empowers people to become more sustainable through affordable land trusts, energy efficiency and urban food garden programs.

Lecture 5, Environmental Policy, by Fran Pavley
Senator Fran Pavley represents Senate District 23 - including portions of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties - in the California Legislature. She was elected to the forty member State Senate in November, 2008 and was immediately appointed to chair the Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee by Senate pro Tempore Darrell Steinberg. While in the Senate, Fran will focus on education, water, consumer protection, and creating a clean, secure energy future for California and the U.S., causes she has championed over the course of her career.

Lecture 6, Student Activists, Initiatives, and Beyond by Matthew E. Kahn
Matthew E. Kahn is a Professor at the UCLA Institute of the Environment, the Department of Economics, and the Department of Public Policy. He is a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Before joining the UCLA faculty in January 2007, he taught at Columbia and the Fletcher School at Tufts University. He has served as a Visiting Professor at Harvard and Stanford. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Chicago. He is the author of Green Cities: Urban Growth and the Environment (Brookings Institution Press 2006) and the co-author of Heroes and Cowards: The Social Face of War (Princeton University Press 2009). Lecture 7, Water and Urban Runoff by Andy Lipkis
Andy Lipkis began planting trees to rehabilitate smog- and fire-damaged forests when he was 15 years old. He founded the nonprofit environmental organization TreePeople and has served as president since 1973.

Lecture 10, Consumer Awareness and Choice, by Stacey Malkan and Ferris Kawar
Stacy Malkan is the author of "Not Just a Pretty Face: The Ugly Side of the Beauty Industry," that exposes the toxic truth about everyday personal care products.
