A Heart Beat Away.......By Millie Toups
Our mother was sick, when I was born
So as a baby , I was placed in you arms.
Our father spoke softly, as he passed me to you.
This baby is yours ,sis..til her mother pulls through
Five years later, mom passed to the other side
& soon father followed, to be with his bride.
Between you & I , a unique bond was made,
that for 52 years was never broken or swayed..
Even after you married & had babes of your own,
Our bond never faded & it only grew strong.
Though miles where between us, we always stayed close
We playfully argued who loved who the most
We've laughed & we've cried , sharing joy & sorrow.
We shared all our dreams & hopes for tomorrow.
As I sat by your bed, watching you sleep
I'm trying so hard to be strong & not weep.
All of these memories enrapture my mind.
You are more them a sister, you are one of a kind.
Now, it is I, that hears father speak..
He says “ You were so strong, to a baby so weak”
He says it's my time , to watch over you
To be the shoulder to lean on & to help you pull through.
Just know my dear sister, that I love you so much.
Our hearts are as one, they'll never lose touch
Don't be afraid sis, I want you to know
That I'm heartbeat away from wherever you go!

It was a warm summer's night and many of the Indians had forsaken their airless tipis to sleep under the open sky among the cool, sweet smelling prairie grass. One, a young girl called Feather Woman, awoke early. It was not yet dawn and the morning star had just begun to rise above the distant horizon. Well, you know our flutes, you've heard their sounds and seen how beautifully they are made. That flute of ours, the siyotanka, is for only one kind of music, love music. In the old days the men would sit by themselves, maybe lean hidden, unseen, against a tree in the dark of night.

Earth's Making!

Earth is floating on the waters like a big island, hanging from four rawhide ropes fastened at the top of the Sacred four directions. The ropes are tied to the ceiling of the sky, which is made of hard rock crystal. When the ropes break, this world will come tumbling down, and all living things will fall with it and die.
