I first became interested in witchcraft when I was about 13, mainly because of the prospect of doing magic, and secondly because of how COOL the practice was. Candles, incense, knives, elaborate chants and invocations of multiple gods- it sounded pretty awesome.
Over time, however, the true aspect of the religion became clear to me. It became clear that Wicca is a religion that embraces magic, and that spellwork, tools, different names for deity-- all the things that popularly represent Wicca are just additions. They're just a fun (and useful) extra pilled onto the original, simple religion.
In my opinion, one of the goals of Wicca is to eventually not need any extras. I certainly don't think there's anything wrong with using them, but one should get to a place where they understand that the magic and power comes from inside of them, and they don't need any outside object to raise or direct it.
It always bothers me, then, when I see people talking about these extras as if they are the things that define Wicca. I understand when young people do it, but it's especially bothersome when the older witches do it. It's almost as if they feel they have to dress Wicca up in order for the young kids to dig it.
