I was born in 1963, the year of John F. Kennedy’s Assassination and only months following the Cuban Missile crisis. I was born under the Atomic Cloud, as did everyone born in those years of nuclear threat of instantaneous and complete destruction, and assured everyone else would suffer as well. Every child since has lived with this threat, but The Doomsday Generation faced it first as a way of life, and part of our childhood. Armageddon was my bread and butter, my entertainment, and I anticipated having a front line seat. I still do, as we have watched the world continue.

Never before has a generation lived under such stress of death, from the moment we awakened in our cribs. Certainly civilizations have lived under death threats. Personal death exists always, and every human being will eventually die. The stress came in the fact that we could destroy all life on earth, and that we had an enemy, which could do the same to us. The battle promised two millennium and more ago, of a world destroying, planetary genocide became possible. We now were born in the last days, as conceived by man, by creating a true threat of nuclear annihilation. This was a stress on a generation, which had to share this, with others of our generation in all nations. This was not a national threat, but a global one. In many ways it was a cosmic one.

As a young child, I was a soldier for Christ, a dedicated member of Fairfield Baptist Church, and at least once a month at St. Peter’s in Chicago. I was raised with a full understanding of Christian beliefs, memorizing long passages, and active at many levels. I knew beyond a doubt that there was a war between Yahweh and Satan, and that every human was the thing that these entities beyond personal comprehension were battling for, at least their souls upon their death. Those Yahweh or God of the Bible promised eternal heaven for winning over souls to Christ, and Satan or Lucifer, who would be allowed to torment those who failed to make it to Yahweh’s New Jerusalem and a New Heaven. My youth ended with me becoming the youngest full member in the history of Fairfield Baptist Church, 13 years and 4 months old.

In my mid-teenage years, the pressure of society was deep. The 70’s unleashed the worse economic crisis since the great depression. It was impossible to find a job as a teen, and it was a time many teens were being turned out of their homes, or leaving the terrible pressure of broken homes. I ended up a street teen, in Humboldt Park and Downtown Chicago, trying to survive. It was a short period, but of an intensity that is hard to imagine now. I had deeply profoundly soul rendering and mind changing experiences, magical and personal, as well as a total look at what made me a human being and the value of my soul. By the time I was 17, I was a sailor in the US Navy. It saved my life.

In my 20’s, I was a lost agnostic, sick with armaggedon and the whole concept of judgment day. I could no longer grasp that this was the future of humanity, and this was a good thing. It was nightmare visions I suffered, along with millions of others. I was filled with and sickened with the gifts of prophecy, visions of a world to come, psychic premonitions, and deep dreams. It was a time of great pain, being able to understand that my soul was saved and eternal, but everything God had created was so much a stage set waiting to be destroyed in some kind of Cosmic Morality Play. I could not conceive that at all. It made God mean and small.

By the time I was thirty, I had finally begun to understand that what we focus on is what we create. It’s a simple universal rule, and I decided that I did believe in God, always had, and feel God in my soul. The God I came to understand is one of infinite capabilities, infinite understandings, and an infinite number of possible incarnations and forms amongst an infinite universe. That the universe was more complicated and detailed then we could possibly manage.

This Infinite aspect of god, means there are other entities, which have Godlike qualities, even as we ourselves do. A level of Sentience that is beyond us, for now, and that we can only conceive in limited ways. That the Gods we see, and interact with, are powerful entities we do not yet understand, and have ways of interacting with us and each other in ways we have yet to fully comprehend. We do not yet have the senses required, and information to fully comprehend the deities we call the Gods. There is little doubt in my mind, that these entities are what we have been interacting with since we have been perceiving deity. That in fact the Gods themselves are real, separate and apart from the Infinity of God, just as we are real and separate, apart from this Infinity. That these Gods, born of the Infinite, as a way to interact within the cosmos, represent the thought level entities we call the Gods and Goddesses.

So one truth I accepted was that there is a level of being called “Gods and Goddesses” and that they interact with us on a mental and spiritual level, even if only in that part we call the imagination, and they share their existence with us, and sometimes through us. To us they may appear of infinite power, but they may not be so. They too may be struggling to create conditions for achievement the same as we are. That we ourselves are part of their existence the same as they are part of ours. That they themselves are seeking power within a society so beyond us, that we have no ability to yet understand. We may be part of a cosmos so spectacular and so filled with Gods and Goddesses, that we are but the tiniest of creatures looking out from our tiny mouse holes, awaiting the evolution to change us and allow us to join this infinite universe as another expression of God.

So as one of the Doomsday Generation, I was raised to believe in the society we were living in would achieve a golden age, and at the height of that wonderful society, perfect in almost every form, it would be destroyed for it’s human corruption within, and satanic influence from without. Yet, until that moment of annihilation, we would and must strive for victory and dominance, creating and recreating our technology to win this war, this impossible war where nothing survives, except the select few victors headed to heaven. We are still in the grip of this innovate and invent to survive mode. This is the motivating force within the Doomsday society; assure personal survival or utter destruction of the enemy. Both Surviving and destroying the enemy was the best possible goal.

Technology is the only common answer to win this battle, unless the supernatural becomes part of this war. So humanity in some way, has to destroy themselves in a war, led by one of many gods, in order to redeem the true believing souls, and reward them with eternity as a reward. I have seen this on the micro-level, like Heaven’s Gate and Jonestown. This is a real and deep urge to planetary genocide and self-destruction suicide of whole nations on the altar of sacrifice to one of more of these entities called the Gods. Our social and scientific ability is making it possible to bring it into existence the ability to fulfill prophecy, and therefore the urge to complete the prophecy rides with us.

As my 40’s began, I was fully engaged in working towards changing the world, and seeking to find a path to the future. My life is all about surviving the end of the world and becoming part of the larger entity known as Gaia. In other words, I want to feel more being part of life itself, and that the Mother Earth is worth living for. That the thought forms of armageddon we possess, can and be worked around, and that we have in fact a future of many millions of years yet to come. This is the message of Gaia, that we still have millions, quite possibly billions of years of continued life and evolution on earth and beyond. That we are not at the end of the human story but just at the beginning. It is our choice which way we go, which Gods we follow, what destiny we pursue. In the end we are baby gods ourselves, being equipped with free will and all the parts for us to express God in our own ways, and with our own miracles.

The Universe challenges Gaia, our Earth Mother and we Children of her body, share in these trials. Her future is part of our future. We are completely dependent on her for all our lives, from the production of food to the air we breathe. All our gifts of life come finally from Mother Earth and her interactions with life. Does this level of intelligence, which we are part of, and is billions of years old, deserve some respect, some acceptance of the primary forces in our lives? For me, the answer is yes.

This change of my thinking that the earth was a disposable asset, on road bump on the way to a heavenly home, to one that Gaia, our mother is a billions of years old force that has kept all life flowing, no matter the odds of survival was a 180-degree change for me. This was a dramatic change for me because I was raised to accept that the Earth was something disposable, and to be used up, and finally destroyed in Armageddon, which we were truly facing in this very generation.

Only when I truly discovered the richness and wealth we have on this planet, did I realize we never left Eden, and that we have always been in the Garden of God, of Gaia, waiting for us to mature into spiritual adulthood. To believe we have ever left paradise, is to understand the profound change in human psychology, and the desires we harbor, either from our own thoughts or with those thoughts we share with the Gods of our lives. That wanting of more, whatever more is, separates us from all other forms of creation on this planet. We evolved into beings that want more, much more than any creature has ever demanded, and we are not done yet. We will demand the stars as our legacy or we will destroy ourselves, maybe both. We are that hungry a species.

The Doomsday Generation, has to make a change in the thinking of the species of humanity, or it will allow itself to continue the singularly dangerous and obsessive belief in Armageddon, and an all out genocidal war. In fact, humanity is under just such a conflict as we speak. One God, has deemed no others are worthy of worship, and that One God is Allah, and is expressed only one way, as stated in the Koran. In the Bible, the very same God is called many names, but makes it clear he is the only one. That this God demands blood of all those who do not believe, and the death of all those who do not submit. This is Armageddon no matter how you look at it, as their can only be one winner, at least in their eyes. We need to find a way to allow humanity to live in personal peace, and accept others, and their gods and goddesses, and remove violence as a tool of faith. The first step is to have an understanding that we reject a planetary war as our final solution for peace, and change the way we think about the future to one where life continues for many many millennium to come.

So it’s in this generation, no matter what generation you are reading this from, that you must continuously understand and accept that war and planetary destruction is not humanities only path to peace. This is because it will take only one generation to decide Armageddon is worth it, and only a few hours to destroy everything we know and have today, unleashing death that may end all life, but at the very least ending human civilization as we know it.

In my quest to take us off the path towards Armageddon, I discovered the belief in Witches, and their abilities. Simply, the Witch in all her names and his names, are people who could interface with nature and the hidden world of spirits. They had a craft and a skill set that could sense the world around them, and have a personal communicative relationship with Gaia herself.

In many ways I believe the best hope for humanity is in the hands of those who believe in a future, and that is definitely the Wiccan point of view. Otherwise, the Doomsday generation will become a fact instead of a comment in a blog.

I too am of that generation. And like you started in a Baptist church. Unlike you my parents were asked not to bring me to sunday school(do they still call it that?) anymore because I kept asking too many questions. lol little did I know the path that would eventually lead me to. I share your fears of what may happen..and am horrified at times at the violence that seems to plague this world. You seem to have come to wicca through logic and a sensible thought process/education. All of which show in your incredible knowledge base. For me...I just felt it. The incredible connection with the earth ..with all of it. As if I could stretch my self out onto the wind and beyond and feel it pull and speak to me. Too crazy huh? I'm a solitary witch with no formal training other than what I got out of books...til I met you and found witch school. But even without that knowledge I know this world has real hope. For there is love and light all around..we just have to help people find it.
Blessed Be

A very personal look at things. Though one I largely agree with. It is messages such as these that we need. Hope creates the positive thought form. With many seeing darkness on the horizon and planning for the worst, we forget to plan for the best as well. When we cloud the mind with What-if's they normally stray toward the negative variety. We need something positive. We need people on the street corners of the world singing in harmony.

A blog of Biblical proportions, a dream like state, Jungian philosophy, a new Renaissance, Buddhist thought and even a dash of nihilism. That's quite an interesting display there Ed. I've believed in you and Witch School for a while now, even when not a part of it. Now I believe it it even more, especially the more I learn about yourself and your vision.

It's hard to even begin to comprehend the infinite. We've all through ages past, in different parts of the world, created our gods in our image to explain the world, or to give praise to whatever spirits we needed to as local gods, that over time formed pantheons. Of course as you know, as the world expanded, it was inevitable our gods would run wars against one another. We see this even in Norse mythology, the Vanir and the Aesir, made a truce and the tribes of gods (and you can guess their human counterparts) assimilated. Unfortunately, peace isn't always the case. Sometimes it is. After all, Buddhism did save the violent souls of the original Tibetans. Such a violent, war-like people. Now we see them today as peaceful individuals, capable of alarming feats of the body.

Do I know of any one "way" that is true in the world? No. I don't know that one way is more true than another. What I can project though, is that as much as Wicca is bringing together a dualistic view of Deity as male and female, lovers, mother and child, we must learn to do the same between Western and Eastern philosophies. Eastern philosophies seek oneness with the world, enlightenment from within and some of them acknowledge spirits, and ancestors, but seek ultimately personal truth and enlightenment from themselves and an inner peace. The problem exists in the fact that most of this exists in a passive manner, not striving to share itself with the world. It's isolationist. On the other hand, Western philosophy has always brought about with it that sense of courage, seeking new frontiers, expanding boundaries and that drive to discover and invent. Western philosophy has dealt with the here and now, the logical, more of the material realm. Only between finding a balance between these two ideas, and seeking to take what we know and invent for ourselves a new way not born of the same names and prejudices, but a new way to look to the future that can be adapted by anyone. This is of course one thing Wicca has above other forms of Paganism, including reconstruction paths. That it can celebrate Deity namelessly as the Lord and Lady, as simple as that.

I've considered you a great teacher from the beginning Ed, and each time I listen to you speak, or read one of your blogs, that idea is reinforced. I believe in this future too. There was a time once when the world worked well, and was not introduced to the concept of sin, and was not in need of redemption. No, Pagan art and literature fueled the minds and old souls and brought about some of those old golden eras that you speak of in your blog. Maybe yet, we will see them again. One day, if we but work for it.

If anything, your blog has only caused me to press my own mind's boundaries even further. Reminding me I cannot always simplify the universe, but that I may not ever be able to fully comprehend it either. Ultimately, we're all going to have to open to Spirit, and not in a human understanding, if we're going to look beyond how we've developed and our ways of life, and see that we can find in each other friendship, and all work towards a better way. First we'll just have to develop a new era of conditioning to bring out a new side to ourselves based upon what we've experienced thus far in life, and truly begin building a brighter, and better future, whether it's called Pagan or not.

Hm, so much to think over, so short a lifetime.

A few years ago, while traveling, I chanced to see a bolt of lightning start a forest fire. I saw the strike, then the ominous red glow, then drove through a rain of ash on my way to another place.I felt grief at the loss of so much in nature. Miles down the highway, on the same trip, the Goddess revealed another place, in Yellowstone National Park, where a forest fire had wiped out massive acres brief years before. There, the earth had renewed herself. Lush green covered the earth and baby trees stood between the blackened spires. In that moment I knew that no matter what happens, life goes on. Even if Armageddon comes, something will survive, and the earth will again give birth to life. Have faith and know we are not the children of Doom; we are the children of light.
