To be a Witch or to not be a Witch

I have studied Wicca most of my adult life. I am 40 now. I took a small detour to the Christian church for a few years, but was always called back to my roots in Wicca. I consider myself a Witch. Maybe I'm wrong. I have never been initiated, been a member of a group or coven. I have always considered myself a solitary until joining WSI a few months age.

I decided to restart my training here at WSI. I also have a friend who is studying with me. My friend is new to wicca, a few months. He asked me if he was a Witch now. I honestly don't know what to say.

Is he a Witch? Have I ever been a witch?

Any comments would be appreciated.

I had a grandmother and a Mum who were Witches. Inside, I always knew it was my path. Like you, I tried other paths but never seemed to fit. I have studied and committed totally to the Wiccan way of life, and have now been a practicing Wiccan for approx 35 years. I still continue to study, as there is always more to learn. What better guidelines can one have than this.......

Some times it changes dramatically, sometimes it just evolves, but it is never static, jut like you are never static. What you are doing right now is right for you, you don't need anyone to tell you that :) One of the many wonderful things about the Pagan path is that there are no rules, just possibilities :)

I studied along time on my own before discovering Witchschool approx 6 years ago........
This is so personal for each of us........

Comment by Robert Ransom on November 25, 2009 at 12:05am: I can empathise. There are aspects of pagan spirituality that attract me. Never been innitiated or in a coven. I also am looking to others to collaborate my magical doings with in my area. I dont consider myself a wiccan. But I would preferr to study It and be around it more. I am fortunate to have attended some rituals in the past few years. I am a musician and could see myself adding notes to an event. But yeah I think I consider myself self styled, carving my own niche in the temple of my unique spirituality.

Comment by Skyladona on November 24, 2009 at 10:58pm: I agree with Jen, only you can decide when (or indeed IF) you will call yourself "Witch". The reasons are individual and therfore limitless. There are many who call themselves witches, but act in ways completly contrary to the Rede, does this still make them a Witch? Others feel a great ugency to collect "Witchy things", join groups and claim obscure lienage, so they can call themselves Witch. A great many witches I have known have a very similar answer - "I guess I always have been, I just didn't know what I felt and believed had a name" But for most, when the time is right you will know, and great joy will come at that self aknowledgement :) The important thing is to always do what is right for, and works for you.

Comment by Jennifer Surdam on November 24, 2009 at 9:59am: Joining WSI doesn't preclude you being a solitary--WSI can be a community of people coming together to learn, or it can be a place where you join others in a group or coven. I think you're the only person who can say if you're a Witch or not, but if you "keep coming back to your roots," and they really are in Wicca, you've really answered your own question. JMO, of course, and take it for what you will...
